The word HOLY MATRIMONY
Jesus is the groom and the church is his bride. He will come back to marry the church.

Because I'm American and I fell in love with a man from Germany, and we thought it would be kind of nice if we could live together for more than 90 days every six months. :)

Marriage is not a religious arrangement. It is a civil arrangement. The fictitious god and the very silly bible have NOTHING to do with it.
Marriage existed way before the xtian religion took it on board as a 'holy' thing.
Delete god from your conscious mind and everything makes sense.

Ah, man I wish I was good with words and educated with the world history of man. To be limited in perspective of human history and world faiths and - I just can't figure out what to say.
Having freely chosen not to believe in GOD - does not mean they are cut off from GOD, GOD is still with them. Finding love is not reserved to religious people.
The grandchildren or great great great grandchildren may be great religious leaders, that save millions. Or not. But the miracle of finding someone to marry is not lost on anyone.
GOD doesn't force humans to live as he wants.

I don't worship the Xian god. But I do believe in a higher power be it a God/Goddess or both. I married my hubby because I love him and wanted to acknowledge my commitment to him. Love is not just a xian emotion and just because I don't worship your god doesn't mean I'm not a moral or good person. The U.S. needs to have more religious tolerance.

There are a lot of non-theistic reasons to get married. Some people want a ceremony to signify their intention to stay together for the rest of their lives, and there are various taxation and healthcare benefits for couples which only apply after marriage, depending on where you live of course. It's also important if you die while intestate.

Well, I'm not married, and even if I was, what does God have to do with anything? It's more of a legal thing than religious thing. Sure, you could have all those sermon's 'bout God and blah blah blah...but it's just a legal ceremony saying, we're gonna be together, AND it's more of a romantic thing. It's an expression of love for one another. If you wish for God to be in it, so be it....but for those of us who do not believe in your or any god, then we can have it without him/her/it. Besides...I won't marry God, so why ask?

marriage contracts are under the jurisdiction of the state, not the church

anyone can marry anyone, or anything, but if the state doesn't recognize it, then it means nothing

the state recognition of a marriage makes it possible for spouses to inherit property, be covered under health and life insurance, and allows one spouse to make decisions for the other, no church on earth can make those decisions, only the state can

What? I got married because I feel in love with someone, and we thought it would be a grand idea to live together and raise a family (20 years latter, it would seem it was a good idea). What does god have to do with that?

We were married in the catholic church as a kind of gift to our catholic parents. Being married also made life easier. We were almost turned down for an apartment because we were not married. And it allowed us to file joint tax returns. I love my wife intensely, and our wedding was a fantastically joyous occasion, but I sometimes regret that we decided to marry.

More favorable taxes
Legal safeguards

Oh, and a wish to declare my devotion to the one man I truly want to spend my life with.

There was marriage before monotheism. marriage has nothing to do with God in the grand scheme of things.
