In their November 2007 issue, Consumer Reports rated these cameras in this order: Sony Alpha A100K; Nikon 40DX; Olympus Evolt E410; and Canon Digital Rebel Xti. All have a list price of $800. There was very little difference among them in terms of the CR score, although the Sony had a very slight edge over the other three. It was also the heaviest at 22 ounces, the Olympus the lightest at 16 ounces. The Nikon had the best flash range at 14 feet; the others were about 11 feet. The Nikon has the largest ISO setting range, from 100 to 3200. The others were 100 to 1600. Only the Sony has an image stabilizer. All rated the same in terms of image quality, battery life, and ease of use, and all had 10 megapixels. Both the Nikon and Olympus qualified as "easy-to-use quick picks", but the Olympus has the better brand repair history for this type of camera, significantly better than Nikon.

Based on the mini-writeup, I would focus (no pun intended) on the Nikon and Olympus cameras and pick the one with the features you are most interested in. Myself, I would go with the Nikon, even though it's heavier, because of the greater flash range. But the Olympus has through-the-lens live focusing.

The bottomline is which camera feels best in your own hands? Any of dozens of experts could recommend the camera system they own (I have Nikons), but it should be a personal choice. Not all cameras handle the same. Some require menu upon menu for settings. Others seem to require 3 hands! I've made my choice and you should do the same.

I, and one of my brothers shoot Nikon. Another brother shoots Sony. Still, a fourth shoots Canon. Who's right? We are are, because we chose what suits our styles of photography.

you're saying you're a beginner, so my wager is you decide on something common, good, and which will final you for a protracted time--and that's stable adequate which you would be able to proceed utilising it as you alter into greater progressed. Nikon gets my vote. They make stable cameras with out the "bells and whistles" that maximum non-experts do not choose and don't have the money for. They not often have issues and are extraordinarily plenty indestructable. i discover my Nikon takes greater constructive photos and desires much less maitenance than my Olympus. i've got by no potential owned a Sony digicam, yet i comprehend people who've, and that they look continually sending them in for fix. Canon cameras are stable, yet they tend to not be as good. whether, the shy away to Nikon is that this is particularly high priced, rather the older (and greater constructive) fashions. I reccomend you maintain for awhile and purchase a stable Nikon--you will choose it for years and it is going to likely be nicely worth it. the different option is to purchase a greater reasonably-priced digicam. in case you are trying this, be warned which you will might desire to take very stable care of it to avert harm. i like Phoenix--this is a extraordinarily decrease priced and strong organisation. (i don't understand in case you may get it in Asia, however. . .I stay interior the States.) yet please do not "save" money by potential of procuring for on line. you do not understand if what you're getting is a good digicam. purchase a digicam in guy or woman and ascertain you're getting what you decide on. stable success!

Of your selections I like the Evolt E510. But take a hard look and one you did not list. Pentax K10D. Its a little more rock solid then the others you listed and is loaded with features some of the others don't have.
