The priests were part of the Levite tribe. Jews with the last name of Kohane, or a derivitive of Kohane, are descended from Aaron. The Levites weren't given any land because they tended the Temple and prepared offerings. Their only means of support was the offerings they prepared.

Since the destruction of the 2nd Temple in the year 70 CE, there has been no need for priests, but when/if the Temple is rebuilt, it will be the Levites who will prepare the sacrifices.

The last priest in the Levitical line, we do not have the name of; however, at the time of the death of the Saviour, we are told in Matthew 27, there was a great earthquake, and so great along with other things, the lamb who was as the evening sacrifice to be killed by the priest, ran away the earthquake was so strong, and at that very time of Christ's death as well, there was a tearing of the giant curtain which separated the Holy Place of the Temple, from the Holy of Holies, was ripped by Heaven, from the top to its bottom, showing/opening up, the Holy of Holies to all. These signs, actually tell the world, the last working Levitical priest, was that man of Levi who could not catch the lamb which ran away at the earthquake, as Christ, the Lamb of Yahuwah, was the Father's Sacrifice. Although the priests continued to do the work they had done since the days of Aaron and Moses, the first Levitical priests, the actions were no longer noticed by Heaven, as Messiah Yahushua was the antitype of the typical lambs formerly offered, and no more was there a reason for the death of animal sacrifices, as type had met antitype in the death of Christ, bringing the Levitical priesthood to a close, the evening of Nissan 14, the time of the death of the Master Yahushua at the 3rd hour..

The Levites supplied some notable examples of enthusiasm for true worship. This was evident in the golden-calf incident and again when Levites moved out of Jeroboam’s territory following the split in the kingdom. (Ex 32:26; 2Ch 11:13, 14) They were also zealous in their support of Kings Jehoshaphat, Hezekiah, and Josiah as well as of Governors Zerubbabel and Nehemiah and the priest-scribe Ezra in their efforts to restore true worship in Israel.—2Ch 17:7-9; 29:12-17; 30:21, 22; 34:12, 13; Ezr 10:15; Ne 9:4, 5, 38.
As a tribe, however, they did not support the Son of God in his work of restoration, although some individual Levites became Christians. (Ac 4:36, 37) Many of the Levite priests became obedient to the faith. (Ac 6:7) With the destruction of Jerusalem and its temple in 70 C.E., the family records of the Levites were lost or destroyed, bringing the Levitical system to an end. But, a “tribe of Levi” constitutes part of spiritual Israel.—Re 7:4, 7.

It didnt, imo. LDS (mormons) believe that the apostles had it and then it was removed from the earth, along with the official church of God, because had it stayed it would have been skewed into a deep state of apostacy. Joseph Smith was later given back the keys and authorities of the priesthood power of God and that of the building of Gods church once more.

Mormons believe that it still exists and is given by the laying on of hands by those with the authority to do so to worthy young men when they are at an appropriate age.

Why would God remove everything he use to have in his original church and just give people nowadays one book to worship by? In the Bible the church was organized with prophets, apostles, temples, priesthood authority and yet mainstream christianity believes it is all just not important anymore even though it was so incredibly important before. We really must not be that important to God if they got all that support and authority and all we get is one book that can be interpreted 50 different ways.

Orthodox Jews still practice the priesthood in hopes to rebuild the temple one day and resume priestly practices.

Christians on the other hand believe that Jesus is our one and only Priest, not of the order of the Levites, but of an even greater priesthood that of Melchizedek.

you can ask the Jew
but in
Heb.7:11-17 levitical priesthood end
If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?

12For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.

13For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar.

14For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.

15And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest,

16Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.

17For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

Depends on how one takes it.

If one believes the Levitical priesthood ended when Christ died on hte cross; I am thinking John the Baptist. (His Dad got the message of John's birth on the day of atonement in the Holy of Holies).
I would have to research Annas and Caiphas?
If the Levitical priesthood exist today; who is tyhe last???

It ended when the Messiah came. In the book of Hebrews Jesus is said to be of the order of Melchizidek. Righteous Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek. Both the Jews and Muslims trace their faith to Abraham. Since Jesus is called the Prince of Peace it would be wise if they both would honor this great High Priest.

Interestingly enough, the Levite line has not failed, even to this day.
