Is it a sure bet that Jimmie Johnson is this year's Nextel Cup Champ? Is it possible that Jeff Gordon could come out ahead next week? I'm kinda new to NASCAR and drew Jimmie's name in a pool at work.

Jimmie is sitting in the cat bird seat but i dont understand the people who think this championship is over. There is 400 miles to race. Fun fact in the 2 other racing series known as the IRL and F1 the point leader going into the final race didnt leave with the championship. Raikkonnen beat hamilton in f1 and franchitti beat dixon in irl. I think Gordon has a great shot. Anything can happen. Its racing. Flat tire, part failure, getting caught up in a mess u didnt create. Its not over until they cross the finish line. No one thought Alan could be bill in the last race and he did it.

Jeff definitely has a chance. There are so many scenarios as to how Jeff could win. The main one is if Jeff wins & Jimmie finishes 18th or worse. But, if the 48 car has problems early (cut a tire, crash, get taken out), Jeff doesn't even to win the race. It's right down to the wire & it is going to be great to watch.

Its not said that it is a sure bet, but it looks as if it is.

After the race on Sunday, Jeff Gordon said that it was over and they had tried their hardest.

So to Jeff Gordon it is over and Jimmie Johnson is the winner, but it hasn't been said for sure yet.

If Jimmie Johnson finishes 18th or higher he wins the NNC.

In my opinion, it's already over and Jimmie Johnson won!

it is not a sure bet Jimmie Johnson will win the championship (hope he does,
i am going to the race and am a HUGE fan)
I believe that he needs to come in 18th or better in order to win the championship regardless of what jeff gordon does.
Its not a sure bet but pretty close to it!

He's right... its not a sure thing, but about as close as you can get. the scenario is that to win regardless of what Jeff Gordon does... Johnson has to:
Finish 18th or better if he doesnt lead a lap
Finish 19th or better if he leads at least one lap
Finish 21st or better if he Leads the most laps

He can finish worse with laps lead due to bonus points in teh standings.

just for some extra info...Johnson has finished below 21st just 5 times in 35 races this season. So it is looking pretty good.
and remember that if jeff gordon doesnt win, that allows Johnson to be able to finish even lower!

your lookin good in that pool of yours!! Good luck (even though i'm a 24 fan, haha)

even if jeff gordon wins the race and leads the most laps, all johnson has to do is finish in the top 18 to clinch the title. the only realistic chance gordon has is if johnson wrecks or blows an engine
