I have a 1988 Cadillac Sedan Deville, and the light just came on today saying "Service Soon" I want to know what does that mean, is it just a tune up? Or just needs some fluids? I'm asking now before I go to a mechanic so I can have some idea what I'm getting myself into.

The amber "Service Engine Soon" warning lamp is there to let you know there is a malfunction in the emission control \ fuel management system. It means "FIX ME, I'M BROKEN". Ignoring it can lead to additional repairs that are more costly. Most the time the on-board computer can make adjustments to allow the vehicle to run well until you get the car fixed. The Cadillac has several computers that "talk" to each other and the "trouble codes can be accessed through the A/C control head by a professional mechanic. The trouble codes give the technician a starting point to diagnose the problem. The manufacturer has diagnostic "flow charts" for the technician to follow in order to properly diagnose and fix the problem without selling you hundreds of dollars worth of un-needed parts.
Go to a good shop or the dealer for diagnosis, not just code pulling. And you shouldn't ignore it just because the car still runs OK.

If the lamp is just a "service soon" light it could be the oil change monitor and must be reset, but I'm not sure the 88 year model had it.

Be careful with the words "Tune-up". It does not mean what it used to. Basically it is a maintenance spark plug change and does not include adjustments or diagnosis. If you are lucky it might include replacing the air filter. Much too often the consumer believes that a tune-up will fix anything that's wrong with the car. That is NOT so. Used to be, way back when cars had contact points and ran on leaded fuel, that a tune up would include adjustments and some diagnosis, not these days.
