What are you scared of?

Generations lived with a draft. There was one when you're grandpa was young enough to join the military. There may have been one hanging over your dad too. There was certainly one around for your great grandpa.

When I graduated from college there was a draft. I joined the Navy because my grandfather was Navy... among other reasons. I spent about a quarter of a century in the service. Now I'm retired and pretty much do what I want... I retired at 45... you can't do that from a civilian company.

If you're worried about getting killed, don't. Not that many are getting killed. That's all the dumb news talk about. There are hundreds of thousands that don't get killed. They don't make the news. Nobody seems to care about them.

This country has made it possible for you to go to school where you want, to go to sports events when you want, to go out to dinner when you want, to go on vacations when and where you want, to pretty much say what you want and do what you want. In a very real sense, if it were not for this country, you might not even be here. And you're afraid the country might tap you on the shoulder and say, "Time to pay the bill"? Why? You go to MacDonalds and pay for what you get there...right? MacDonalds is more important to you than your country? Fries and a soft drink are more important to you than being able to grow up with the freedoms you enjoy?

I highly doubt the draft will be reinstituted anytime soon. Right now we dont need it anyway our forces are large enough to handle the current conflicts...they are becoming strained...but not to the point a draft is needed.
Also, you have to think of the money involved in a draft. Do you really think the Congress will go for paying all those extra troops and all the gear, equipment, etc that goes with that...they are struggling as it is to get the money allocated for projects we already have set in place. Its just not to workable today.
However, the Selective Service system remains in place should a day come when we have to go back to a draft to protect our nation. If the time came when a draft was called, Id go because Im an American and I want it to remain that way.
So dont be scared, the likelyhood of a draft is pretty slim.

I'll start off by saying I am not a supporter of a draft.
A lot of people are pushing for a draft that have no intention of being drafted - roughly 28 mil US citizens are between 18-25. If there is a draft of 10%, the number of draftees means about 1 out of every 100 citizens would be drafted (i.e, chances are slim). The upside to this is that if all of our civilian leaders (White House, Congress) may be forced to send their children to fight on the front lines, they will make darn sure ahead of time that it is a necessary war rather than political posturing for one reason or another. So there would theoretically be a smaller chance of even being in a war, forget being drafted for it. Plus, kids from less wealthy backgrounds could get their teeth fixed, eyesight corrected, college scholarships and education benefits that they would not otherwise get.
And say you did go to war. I have been a couple of times now, and I'm fine. So are most of my friends. Not all, but most. We even have a bunch of great memories that I will never, ever forget. And the friends that I made there will never be surpassed by any that I could make stateside.

Nothing to be scared of either way and I don't think much of your teacher for trying to scare you and others this way.

No. No draft. Why?

It's completly impractical. So impractical, in fact, as to be impossible while also carrying on a war.

A draft will require larger team sizes which requires more troops then at every eschelon. It could easilly take another 2 divisions worth of troops to fill out the 10 active duty combat divisions.

Gone will be the "hands-off" basic training. You think Congress will sign the legisltion to allow for, or at least not call for investigations of, recruits being subjected to "wall-to-wall counselling?"

All of this requires new doctrine. Everything from movement, because of larger, team, squad, and platoon sizes, to command and control because of a lowered reliance on initiative.

Then there's the money issues. Current vehicles have been bought because they easily carry current team/squad/platoon size elements. We'll need either new vehicles or more of them.
You gotta pay, house and feed these people, too.

What percentage of conscripts will stay and make a career of the military? If they are drafted for 6 years (even 4 is too short for many MOSs) which aligns with voluntary enlistment duration (there are variations, but I'm not going to go into that), then you start a revolving door which will inflate the number of people that are then entitled to one level of vererans benefits or another, unless you reduce benefits or raise requirements to be eligible.

What do you do with the people that are "drafted" but aren't suited to service? Not everyone is. The idea is universal service. Or are we going to water down the quality of the force by taking all comers? Won't this result in greater costs in treating these people for injuries for the physically and psychologicaly unsuited?

The devil truly is in the details on this idea.

There will be a draft one day but probably not for another 20 years or so. Americans will be forced to go all out when Iran, Russia and China join forces to shake up the Western states.... Europe, US and also Isreal. There will be a world war in the next 30 years when it goes down a draft will be needed. If the question is about Iraq, we have only lost about 4500 troops..... There has been 2 million sets of boots on the ground over there. We have the people. Think about this we lost 4 times as many troops in one day during WW2 than we have in Iraq in 5 years. The news is full of crap (CNN means communist news network :-)

No the military doesn't want one. This seems to keep getting brought up by old sixties radicals. Maybe they think that if they can scare enough young people with the thought of a draft they can increase opposition to the war.

No there won't be a draft. The government will continue to increase the signing bonus and young men and women will continue to volunteer.

Can`t see that it would happen. The reasons stated above me are valid. There are always people who will join for love of country or out of necessity. I think that an untapped pool of men out there are your many Illegals out there , maybe market the point to them that serving our military is a great way to show your support and love for your New country doing something productive therefore receiving the benefit after of becoming citizens.
