If you go to the vet they should (at least I hope) be able to decide on an ideal weight to work toward. Then, using the caloric content of the food you are using (probably restricted calorie) they can determine exactly how much to feed per day. They do this at the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine, and it's not a difficult calculation. Also, increase exercise. There are toys out there that you can add food to, and these work very well because the dog has to work for their food. My friend has one and it works wonderfully. More walks, more play in the yard can all help. Do it slowly, and don't lose track of things when they drop the weight. Obesity is not a fun thing for dogs, and can cause many health problems. Good luck, I know how hard it can be to get a pet to lose weight!

We had this problem a while ago because we thought our dog was pregnet so we kept giving her more food and she kept getting bigger and SUPRISE, no puppies (no one laugh while they read this I was sooooooo upset) so anyway we had to take off the pounds that she gained shile she had her imaginary puppies. We cut back on her food and we gave her walk at least once every day and played alot of fetch with just enough excercise and a little less food she should return to normal size, like mine did. Also make sure she isn't getting into the trash or someone is feeding her table scraps, thats not good for them.

Also a tip to you, if your dog is female and you ever think she might be pregnet, take her to get xrays, GET PROOF, then change her diet lol.

Cut back on his food and especially treats. There is no excuse for letting your dog get fat. YOU have complete control over his food intake. Never free feed a grown dog.

You didn't say what breed, or which dog food you had it on or how many treats and table scraps....or the age of your dog.
Rule of thumb, grocery store brand dog foods are crap....
Go to an independant dog/pet store and talk with them....find one that is interested in your pet, it's exercise regime, what you're feeding it now,.....then....
listen....no soy, no corn products, no wheat.....
then stop all treats except raw carrots, raw string beans.
Then walk, play ball, 30 foot long line out in a field....play.
Dogs Play and people forget that.

Take it to the vet and talk to the vet about how much weight your dog needs to lose. Have your dog checked to make sure it's health is okay and ask how much exercise your dog should do and for how long.
Do not give dog treats or table scraps.

limit food intake, and add exercise. i would see if you can find a used treadmill and have the dog run on that a few times a day to get exercise.

I had to put one of my dogs on a diet last year but cutting back his portions.. After a week of him whining and thinking he was going to starve to death, he has now lost the weight and is much healthier.--not to mention looks great.

try giving him less food, taking him on daily walks, try a different food, they have come out with dog health foods, or for dogs on diets. try them.
