It was just announced that Pope Benedict XVI will be giving a Mass at Yankee Stadium on April 19, 2008 as part of a 6 day stop in the United States. He will also be the first Pope to visit Ground Zero.

My question....for those that can go WAAAYYY back. For those of you that went to Madison Square Garden to see Pope John Paul II back in 1978, did you have to obtain tickets to see him? Were there any costs to the tickets..though something tells me no. Or were you able to just walk in?

According to the New York Archdiocese, the tickets will be distributed via the local parishes when they become available, but won't happen for some time.

I wasn't yet alive. But I did see Pope JP2 in Central Park. It took hours, and hours to move along the line. But I recall the tickets being free. Receiving them through my school/parish.

Of course that was the Great Lawn, this is Yankee Stadium so it only has a capacity of 58,000 plus how ever many VIPs they squeeze onto the field, itself.

I suspect tickets will be hard to come by; I'd start by asking local parishes. Even if they don't have tickets, they most know how to go about getting tickets.

It will be free, but of course they will accept any offerings/donations you feel like making.

I think you should consult your local catholic church or archdiocese for more information.
