American Heritage Dictionary
cult (kŭlt) Pronunciation Key n.
1) a. A religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader.
b. The followers of such a religion or sect.
c. Obsessive, especially faddish, devotion to or veneration for a person, principle, or thing.
d. The object of such devotion.
The WBC certainly seems to have an obsessive devotion to following the wishes of it's founder and pastor Fred Phelps
This is corroborated in the following information compiled from interviews with some of his sons who ARE NOT involved with the WBC.... http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/michael_haggerty/expose3.htm#CHAPTER%20NINE

Resemble? It's the poster child for a Christian Cult.
He has 13 children total... but only 10 are involved in the church. The other 3 left and from some reports, the girl who left changed her name so no one would associate her with that group. The 10 who are a part of that church are all lawyers. When they get a lawsuit against them for protesting at what would seem at a time and place that Should be illegal, they counter sue for damages and usually win. THAT is what is funding the groups travel expenses to the different funerals. they've won a lot of money in their countersuits.

Oh, it definitely fits the definition.
On the other hand, I feel that too many people place negative associations onto the word "cult" -- in ancient Greece, Pythagoreans and Orphics could have been regarded as a "cult" in the modern definition, but there is hardly evidence that they were any more "dangerous" than the mainstream polytheistic religion, they were just extremists.
WBC, in comparison, is quite dangerous to the minds and well-beings of those involved.

I dont think of that the early Christians truly have been seen a "cult". a minimum of no longer before everything. In later Roman cases, definite. (commencing approximately 70 a.d.) before everything they have been seen a "branch" or "branch" interior of Judaism. i think of even the Christians seen themselves that way. that's why interior the e book of Acts you spot Peter and John going into the temple to worship. it somewhat is for sure why the very concept of letting gentiles into the "Jewish" faith by using way of turning right into a member of the "Nazarine" sect rocked the early Church. They have been initiating to comprehend only how radical and diverse the recent faith truly replaced into. It ought to have been a ask your self to a universal century jewish recommendations-set. a number of them in no way truly prevalent it of direction, and hence, alongside got here the "Judaiezers" that afflicted Paul plenty. thank you for this form of sturdy question. ....theBerean

All I have to read is your initial question to know the answer... YES! I can't read much of the article without being consumed with disgust and hateful thoughts. If there was a hell and anyone should burn in it, it's that dude!

Don't tell the believers. They will tell you the devil himself wrote that. I just wonder if Phelps has a golden throne [toilet cover] to sit his sweet little lying butt on.
