The definition of Buddhism was made by scholars - not by the Buddha. There was no Buddhism. The Buddha didn't invent this term. However, Buddhism is simple – the ism related the teaching of the Buddha. The word Buddhism doesn’t really represent the intention or the teaching of the Buddha or it seems to mislead. Actually what all the Buddha(s) mentioned were the same four noble truths: sufferings, the cause of sufferings, freedom and the paths to freedom, that always are part of our existence.

The Symbols, mentioned by the Buddha Himself, were the alms-bowl of the Sanga and the two pieces of cloths worn by the Sanga. You can find that the Buddha mentioned them several times. Later people invented such and such symbols.

Buddhism is the path of practice that enables a person to completely eradicate existential suffering.

The symbol of Buddhism is typically the Dharmachakra, or wheel of dharma. It has eight spokes representing the Eightfold Path. The circle/wheel (chakra) shape represents the completeness and perfection of the teaching. The hub stands for discipline and ethics, which is the core of the practice, and the rim stands for meditation, which holds everything together.
