I am 27 with a masters degree and I have been talking to a recruiter about enlisting. I got a D.U.I. about 6 years ago which i told him about. About 9 years ago I was charged with posession of marijuana and this charge was subsequently expunged. I thought this meant "wiped of my public record", however the enlistment application as for expunged or sealed records. I told the recruiter about the DUI already but should I tell him about the expunged marijuana charge also?? If I do, does this mean I will be disqualified from enlisting in the Air Force??

It will be found, you need to tell your recruiter about it. If you go to BMT and they find it there you will most likely be discharged for fraudelent enlistment. It doesn't DQ you for enlistment. possesion of anything other than marijuana is disqualifying. Your recruiter already has to do a waiver because of the D.U.I. so just tell him, get the court records and go from there. Good luck.

Either way, you would be making a huge mistake if you enlisted with a master's degree. You need to seek a commission.

To answer your question, talk to your recruiter about it. He does need to know. Whether or not you two decide to include that info is up for discussion. And be prepared for the people at MEPS to ask you if you used marijuana about 500 times.

no such thing as expunged. that just means a basic search will not release the information. the military sees all and gets all. if you lie about it you WILL be discharged for fraudulent enlistment. if you are up front, you have a chance at a waiver.

whether or not the AF is willing to grant the two waivers.. who knows. you must have a standout application, as the AF is downsizing and is VERY picky about who they let in.

any reason, with a Masters, you aren't looking into a Commission in any branch?

The Air Force is quite a bit pickier than the Army and other services, so I'm not sure; but I know they've taken plenty of people with DUI's and marijuana in their past before. I am pretty sure, however, it could harm or even prevent you from getting a security clearance, if that was meant to be a part of your job. Look into it; but it's usually best to be honest.

Don't enlist in the first place, go officer or get a real job.
