Hi:

They use chloroplasts during the day and the Mitochondria during the night to stay alive It like being plug into the electricial grid but if something happens to it you switch to a electricial generator to keep on run until the power comes back on.

chloroplast is needed for photosynthesis. mitochondria generates the energy needed for cellular activities.

Many students think that plants carry on photosynthesis and animals carry on respiration and that's it. Photosynthesis makes the food that plants and animals need. However, that food is in the form of glucose and glucose is not ready for the cells to use. Respiration has to break down the glucose and change its energy into the energy in ATP molecules.

I think of it like this:
I work and earn money, then I can spend my money to pay bills. I'm like a plant. I make something and then I use that something for my needs. Plants make glucose and then they use glucose for their energy needs -- through the process of respiration.

My son goes to school. He doesn't work and he doesn't earn money, but he uses my money for the things he needs. He's like an animal. He gets the money he needs from me, and then he uses it. Animals get the glucose they need from the food they eat, and then they use the glucose for their energy needs - through the process of respiration. They just didn't do the photosynthesis part.

Chloroplasts are for photosynthesis.
Mitochondria are for respiration.
