I'm more fond of cupcakes than cakes personally. Lots of great things to be done with cupcakes.
A dessert buffet is nice. Put out different desert items like mini pies and cookies and pastries. I've also seen this done in place of favors. They got those cute pink bakery boxes stamped with the wedding info and guests walked by and grabbed their goodies to go.

I personally will not leave a wedding until I have cake. I LOVE cake....:)
It is your wedding, do whatever you want for dessert. At my wedding, the cost of the meal included a dessert. Even though I planned on serving wedding cake for dessert, since the price included a dessert, I opted for strawberry shortcake. What ended up happening is we had a TON of cake that was wasted.
Serve the cake. If they don't want it, they can have the fruit thing you're planning on. If they dont like that they can stop at Ben and Jerry's on the way home. Don't worry about it. It's your wedding...
Repeat after me: I am the bride and I can do anything I want at my own wedding!...
Repeat this often until the day after your wedding.

I think pies are a great option for a fall/autumn wedding. I think if it's out of "pie" season, it's weird, unless you are REALLY a pie person.
I don't know if you are having your wedding at a reception hall, but where I am getting married, we had the option of a waffle/ice cream bar, or just a sundae station.
What about mini-bundt cakes with a glaze or fresh fruit (a little more formal than the angel food cake with berries.)
I also think people enjoy an assortment of pastries.
Happy Wedding planning!!! :o) Good luck!

I had a lunch wedding for 40 in Las Vegas. It was catered by an excellent restaurant, and we skipped a traditional wedding cake. Desserts were a couple different kinds of pies, cheesecakes, and conventional cakes. The pies and cheesecakes got huge thumbsups from the guests.
I love cupcakes at weddings, and I think croquembouche (cream puff tower with spun sugar webs) are amazing. If you asked my husband, he would vote for chocolate eclairs and cannoli.

If ur caterer provides it u should maybe try to get the viennese table. Its great , its an assortment of different cakes, pies, everything sweet u can imagine. they make the table look nice and theres something for everyone. And if ur caterer doesnt provide it, instead of ur cake go to a bakery and ask for the Vienesse table.

I always think a variety of dainties is best.
We didn't have a wedding cake, we had a variety of cheesecakes and dainties for after dinner, and late lunch.
