Jesus was into the game of totem poles where Jesus was the top man on the totem pole.
Jesus was forever badmouthing Prophets like Moses, Elijah, and Abraham. Jesus didn't even like competition from his Apostles and refused to make one disciple more important than another. Jesus even called Peter a devil and asked Peter to get behind him.
Jesus was into poetry with I am sayings:
I am the vine, you are the branches.
I am the door.
Before Abraham was, I am.
I am the Christ.
Etc.

The same thing that John said .
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. John 1:1-3
Jesus always was because Jesus is God.

"I AM" in Hebrew and Aramaic is "YHWH", ha-Shem, the Name of the Almighty. In this context, he just finished saying that Abraham was happy to see him come (a reference to Genesis Ch.18). So when he says "Before Abraham was, I AM", the Jews know who he's claiming to be, tear their cloaks, spit on the ground, call for his execution, and all that pious stuff.

All things were made by, for, and through, Jesus Christ. He was with God in the beginning.

God (if there is one) in the present tense...A reminder to the Jewish people that he/she/it never deserted them and wouldn't ever do so.
