I am a student and will mainly be writing papers, some of them may be lengthy. I use it for letters, an occational flyer, but really nothing else. Word is about $110, while Works 9 is $40.

Is there a real need for me to get Word as opposed to Works 9? My computer came with no word processing ability aside from WordPad and NotePad, which to me are worthless.

My laptop is a $300 unit, which I will probably hand down to my daughter, or just completely get rid of it once I graduate college.

What would you suggest?

thanks!

Really, Works will probably do all the stuff you want to do. But since you're a student, if you want Word, Microsoft has a special where you can get Office Ultimate 2007 for about $60. Yes, this is legit, just check it out.

OK, I have both and I would suggest that you get Word.

I mean Works is an excellent program and has so many features like cards, documents, flyers etc...but if you want it to be a hand me down to your daughter I would reccomend Word because I used Works one time for a school research paper and decided to put it on my flash drive. i took it to school and lo and behold I could only open it on Word because that is the sole program my school uses. So it was a few hours late...I had to tell my mom to print it out at home and send it to school. Also, you can't open it through e-mail either and if you have to email an assignment to a teacher that won't work either, sadly.

Not to mention that Word also has powerpoint and a program where u can make professional like books with more features than Works.

(If that is all Word has on your comp. then you can buy the program!)

Basically, Word is a definate investment if you want to hand it down to your daughter...and possibly for you if you go to college for writing or for something you have to do presentations for since you can do power points...and excel has more features too on Word!

Hope I helped!

MS Word is more commonly used then works, my suggestion to you is too stay with word.

Chances are you will probly need to transfer those to another pc later.

And because most people use Ms word, and also to save the hassle of converting those files later.

And to the previous answer word does not hold other programs like power point for presentations etc....

Its the microsoft office package you are refering too, word is just a word proccessing application program but nice try.

Hope that helped anyway

MS Word can be purchased here for $70.

Works is alright, but I think Word has more capabilities. Additionally, Word is more widely used - which is helpful if compatibility is an issue.

If your daughter will be using the laptop for school, I hope you can afford Word.

You can have the best of both worlds!!!

Open Office is FREE and completely compatible with OFFICE (ie, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)

Your school most likely uses Word, so its best to have something that can open and save in a format you can use at home and at school.

Word is much better than works not to mention a lot more people use Word than works so you would be more compatible if you got Word expecially since you're in college.

You need Word. Works is useless because it cannot be read by any computor that dont have it.

Works has flyer templates in it. look on the templates and choose the only you like. making use of a template will save you time and make you look better on your supervisor b/c you probably did the artwork so rapid!
