you have to trick excel into thinking there is something in the cell. Do this by placing your cursor in the cell in the last row of the farthest column you to include, and press the space bar a few times.

In other words, if your print area includes cells a1:d4, go to d4 and put a few blank spaces in it.

Actually the proper way to do this is to select File and select Print Area. Then select the cells you want to print including the blank cells. Under Page Set-up make sure Gridlines is selected (I won't go into details because you said you knew how to do this). That's it.

Right-click on an empty spot on the toolbar and select "tables and borders toolbar"

Now, select all the cells you want bordered.
click the down arrow next to "line style" and select a line style
click the down arrow on the "borders" button to select "all borders" (a square containing a cross)

all cells should be bordered
click Print Preview to check.

if going to page setup and selecting "show gridlines" doesn't do it then highlight all the cells and right click. select "format cells" and go to BORDER Click on everywhere you want a line and can even change the type and color of the lines.

hope I've helped
