My grandfather came to this country legally in 1910. There were no social services to make sure he was feed every night. He did not have free medical care. He had to learn English and become naturalized to vote. He joined the army for WW1, but was never transferred overseas. His children never learned Italian, nor were they encouraged to. He had no desire to ever go back to Italy.
He always told me, "there's no free lunch". Most Americans don't believe this anymore.

It depends on when they came, remember America wasn't empty so the earliest immigrants were all illegal. Once the USA was founded the government encouraged immigration and provided a legal path to follow.

It was much much harder for immigrants to come into the US Illegally, almost impossible. The US gov was not encouraging illegal aliens to come here for the same reasons they are today. The gov back then was open to immigration for different reasons. Not to say that some came here illegally, but it was so much easier to control. The quotas were strict. Assimilation was necessary to survive here. Now, it is reversed, the laws are not being enforced.

Absolutely none, If they were legal immigrants 50 years ago they are the same as a legal immigrant today.
If they were an illegal immigrant 50 years ago then they should have been deported , same as an illegal immigrant today.

Old immigrants came here legally. They learned to be Americans. They learned the language and assimilated into American culture. New immigrants don't want to assimilate they want to change us. They take what they can and mess up the rest. Not going to happen!

In the United States, the older immigrants were treated better, as they properly deserved. The newer ones are being treated worse, as a racist political wedge issue, through no fault of their own. They are good contributors to the nation just as previous generations were.
