A good bottle of wine is ALWAYS a welcome host gift. Even if the host doesn't drink, they can re-gift the bottle later.

Something that doesn't require any special care on the host's part. So don't bring flowers unless you present in a vase with water, ready to be set aside and ignored for 24 hours. Fancy chocolates are fairly mainstream and traditional, but don't expect your host to necessarily serve them. This time of year, small calendars and date books (for 2008) are easy to buy and easy to give. If the host doesn't care to keep it, he/she can "recycle" as a gift for someone else.

as hostess gift i have generally had good expieriences with the chocolates or flowers. i have also brought wine but that is not nearly as safe as everything else.

Take a box of chocolates. Mostly everybody likes chocolates. If you don't know them it's good b/c it's not too expensive.
