Great Danes are wonderful, sweet dogs generally. I have seen a few who have been aggressive, but like any other breed allot has to do with the way they are raised. The big back yard is very good, but they make good house pets too, just be sure to put your breakables above tail level. Those tails can be lethal! Please get a Great Dane book before you decide, because the fact that your dog will be alone for several hours a day, shouldn't be a problem except in the winter. Great Danes have short hair and need to be protected from the elements. Hot or cold. My sister has one who weighs 140 lbs. She has lots of shade in their back yard and gets Patch a child's swimming pool. she does fine, but in the winter, she either need to come in or have a heated dog house. Also, something you should think about, is that a Large breed dog has a shorter life span. Most Great Danes only live 9-10 years. My sisters is 10 and really starting to show problems. They are heartbroken because they are now facing the inevitable. Good luck with you genital Giant!!!

Great Dane Disposition

Generally speaking they are great dogs, however they aren't for everyone. They need to be carefully & responsibly bred. Many BYB Danes have health and/or temperament problems.
They are very trainable, highly intelligent dogs. They are thinkers. A well bred, well socialized well trained Dane is a delight to own, a badly bred, badly socialized untrained Dane can be a nightmare.

I currently own 3 Danes. 2 I got from a breeder and 1 I got from rescue. I compete in obedience, rally & conformation with my Danes. One of my Danes is also a TDI certified therapy dog.
I recommend anyone interested in a Dane go ot the GDCA (Great Dane Club of America) website. I aslo recommend they get the book The Great Dane Model of Nobility by Jill Swedlow. It is a wonderful, informative book written by a very knowledgable Dane person.

Great Danes are wonderful breed of dog.

The Great Dane must be spirited, courageous, always friendly and dependable, and never timid or aggressive.

Training is very simple, you need patients when working with any breed of dog, find a great trainer that works in groups so your dog is socialized while he or she is being trained, and you need to be consistence with the training.
Great Danes are a beautiful dog but can also be very powerful if they know they have the upper hand, you really need to do your research on the breed.

We are the proud owners of "Rosie" she is a 142lb gentle giant. A blue Great Dane, she is extremely intelligent!!!!
I will say, that I've been around calmer danes than Rosie. Getting her to the two year point was a challenge.
She can run like a deer (she has eight acres to run around) and loves to play games.
She was easy to house break, but when she "went" she had a lot to let loose of!!
They all have short hair so they shed a lot!!!
Very strict training from the beginning is the key. They are so smart, that they won't forget what you let them get by with yesterday. So decide before hand the ground rules and stick to them.

Oh, the tail is like a whip. Make sure the kids aren't in the path of it or they will be on the ground.

Good Luck!!!

Hubby & I have lived all our lives with pet dogs. We have found that Great Danes are one of the most intelligent breeds with the least amount of trainning effort. Maybe we were just lucky, the Danes that have owned us have have been the most loving, loyal & PROTECTIVE breed we have had. Great Dane Facts: Your planned pet food budget will triple, Your "pet's bed" is now your livingroom couch, Indestructable Kong toys last 5 minutes, Your broken toe bones are from puppy stepping on your foot, The only safe place to put things that the dog won't get is on top of the fridge. We were blessed with "dry mouths" = non droolers, so every room should have the dedicated drool cloth for wipe-ups of flinging, flying slime strings.(watch the movie Turner & Hooch) And let us not forget the font end loader for picking up puppy-plops. If you have an ex-spouse, mother- in-law or boss you want to "dissappear" just tell puppy to "GO DIG A HOLE" Remember where the hole is because you don't want to lose that new VW Beetle you just bought & your puppy now can't fit in it any more. The only thing left to say is: DANES ARE GREAT.

Ours is fabulous! They are intelligent, athletic, all-purpose dogs. They are great with children and are natural guardians. They ADORE their family and always want to be with them. That only strengthens their instinct to guard the family. They don't have to do much in that department. Looks and body language will do it.

You should feed lower protein food when a pup so they don't grow too fast and develop bone problems. You shouldn't over excercise a pup for the same reason. They are pups for 2 to 2 1/2 yrs because they develop slowly. Training is a must but so much fun!

I've never owned one personally or fostered one but my aunt owns 6 and they're great. Hers are calm and submissive and think they're lap dogs. This probably has less to do with their natural temperaments as the fact that she's taken them all through extensive obedience courses. Hers are very bright and lend themselves well to training.

I would think that with their size obedience training would almost be a requirement, more so than with a normal sized dog. Just to be safe.

Great Danes are wonderful dogs, very laid back, gentle, and relatively easy to train. The only disadvantage for training is their size - there is a lot of dog of work with!

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/530mZ

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.
