viewing the body? or the lowering of the casket into the ground?

Just sitting there & thinking about all the memories and feelings associated with the person and knowing that you'll never have those times together again.

Viewing the body is pretty disturbing - but, in my opinion, they never really look like they did while they were alive.

Lowering the casket in the ground is tough... that's the moment when you're last "direct" connection to the person's body happens and most people say their final farewells at that moment.

Actually just walking in is pretty hard for me. My children's father died 2 years ago. It was an open casket. The idea terrified me the most. Actually seeing the body and lowering the casket into the ground was much easier than my overall fear of facing the whole thing. My kids did fine, too. It was just the initial terror of everything that I had to get past. I did not force my kids to view the open casket, and we requested that it be closed during the funeral. Later I invited them to see Daddy and it went well. I'm very grateful they got to have this closure.

I don't do funerals for my immediate family. When my Mom and three brothers passed I didn't go home. I love them so much I want to remember them as they were. A lot of people thought when my Mom died seventeen years ago that I was making a mistake by not going. To this day I made the right decision.

Having to say my final goodbyes. Knowing you will never see that person again, and just hope that they knew how much you cared for them.
