Thanksgiving is coming up next week and my family and I will spend it in deercamp for the first time. We want to continue with a family tradition of turkey and dressing. What is the easiest way to cook a turkey over a campfire or a hot bed of coals? I have a dutch oven to put in along with the lid.
Any ideas?

I think I will buy a turkey dinner from Kroger. They cook it for you and I don't have to worry about having burnt trukey or it being undercooked. I think that is the best way to go.

You've got a tough job ahead of you. I tried to cook Short Ribs over a campfire once - burned those puppies before I could get them fully cooked. Since you can't control your campfire temperature, that's where the problem comes in unless you cook the turkey in a liquid. Even wrapped in foil and buried in the coals could present a problem but might be the best way to go. If burying, you might put wet leaves on top of it - like they do where they cook the crabs/lobsters, etc. Don't remember whether that was Hawaii or where - saw it on TV. I fear for your dressing since you can't control the heat.
