You are on the way to becoming an alcoholic. You must stop having drinks when you are nervous. It will become a compulsion. Every time you get nervous you will have a drink to take the edge off, but as you keep doing this it will take more drinks. Eventually you will become addicted to drinking every time you get nervous. You need to suppress it now before it gets out of control.

Your just a social drinker which is good. When you drink lots alone that's when you should be worried. We all get nervous but really don't think about alcohol a lot because then you feel like you need it even when you don't. If you continue to think about alcohol, chances are you'll end up taking little sips then bigger ones and eventually drinking alone. Just relax and when that little thought comes up just have a nice hot cup of tea because your probably just getting nervous.

our society has protected alcoholics for many years. It wasn't that long ago policemen would drive home a drunk person driving badly. Our society often considers this behavior normal to get wasted and drunk for any ocassions.... Many of the answers you get will be from people who know nothing of alcohol addiction so keep that in mind. Many people think alcoholics are just taking after dad or that it is normal but it is not
YES, you are becoming an alcoholic because you are relying on alcohol to make it through some days or events in a day

I think you're exactly like 98% of single American's. That's the reason they call it the "social lubricant". I'm exactly the same way and most all or my friends are as well. We don't need to drink when we're around each other, but when going and putting yourself on display in certain situations...It's scary.
If you think about the next time you want to drink, that's also normal. Drinking and being social can be allot of fun. If you're what AA calls "making reservations". Meaning planning what you do, around drinking, then you could be down a bad road.

hey, don't sweat it ur not an alcoholic yet. if u continue on the path u may soon become one, i would suggest drinking the Alcohol free beer and things along those lines. My uncle is an alcohol and he can't go a day with out drinking, but my parents used to have a glass of wine at dinner every night and they were not alcoholics.

You are developing a dependency on alcohol. Using it as a means to get over social anxiety is a sure way to lead to an addiction - you sound like you're on your way. I suggest finding the root of your anxiety problems whether that be thru self-examination or thru a psychiatrist.
Alcohol is not harmless and it is addictive, moreso than most drugs. Good luck and I hope you find help soon.

The fact that you have to have it to control your nerves, and that you think about it on the days you don't drink implies a growing dependence on it. You don't have to be drunk every day to have a dependence on alcohol...which leads to alcoholism.
