Photography has a wide range of specific careers. Besides the normal portraiture, you can be attuned to natural landscapes, photojournalism, architecture, weddings, and more. If it exists, it needs to be captured. No matter what you like to "snap", you can make a career with it.
My recommendation to you is to explore it all. Move between the different fields. That way, if your local market changes, so can you. Good luck and Good shooting!

The most important things you need to start a photography career are a strong business sense and enough start up capital (i.e. money.) Those two things are far more important than camera skill. You will be self employed so you need to understand how to run your business. It also takes a lot of money to get started. Plan on having at least $20,000 to $50,000 in the bank before you start. If you can't do that, then you shouldn't even bother. Of course there will be people who give me a thumbs down and say that the only thing that matters is passion and skill with a camera. Most of the people who say that have spouses who support them or will be out of business in a few years. The reality is, a bad photographer can become very successful if they can run a business, and a great photographer will fail if they can handle the finances.

Before you go down this road, consider the fact that in five years, everyone in the Western world will have a pro-quality camera with a wireless internet connection, on their keychain.
This does not bode well for those who want to be paid for their photographs.
I would consider choosing a profession with a bit brighter future, like selling wireless keychain cameras.

Look around you. Anywhere you see an image - billboards, ads, newspapers, magazines, books, calendars, framed prints, newsletters, websites - someone had to shoot them.
