My 11 year old son has just started senior school today, after having three months off, with bowel trouble, frequently going to the loo.He has had blood test etc done , which all came back clear. He was doubled up in pain, complaining of trapped wind all day at school, which he's not much better this evening. All the school seems worried about is him catching up his school work. I informed them that at the weekend he started bleeding from his rectum. They don't seem to care. I'm thinking of keeping him off school now until we know what we are dealing with. We are waiting for an appointment at the childrens hospital to arrive in the next few days. Do you think i'm being unreasonable?

Your doing the right thing keeping him off school and I'm sure they can always give him homework so he can keep up. Make sure that he sees a paediatrician as they really know there stuff and i speak from experience as my Son's condition was missed time and time again by a normal Doctor.
Good luck and ask lots of questions and if your still not happy then ask for a second opinion.

You're absolutely right, your son's health should come first. If worst comes to worst he might have to resit the year, but that's still better than him being unwell for years to come because nothing was done about it on time. Keep him home at least until you've been to the hospital I would suggest (ask the teacher to give him work to keep up a bit if necessary, so he can work at home in his own time). The doctors will know best when he's ready to go to school.

Above all, don't let the people who try to condemn you for keeping your boy home get to you! Education is important, but not as important as health!

Id keep him at home and ask the school to send him some home work to do so they cant moan about him getting behind with school work.
But his health is more important at the moment as you said he is only 11, in my eyes school isnt as important at 11 as say in 5 yrs, if you know what i mean.

Hope he is better soon and all goes well at the hospital

That's typical. Try and brush off the school's single-minded attitude. You have your young son who's unwell. They have figures and reports to consider but that's their problem. Get him better first, maybe do some reading or something that interests him if he's up to it while he's at home. But don't be harassed!

good for you for standing up to them. you should not take chances with your children and I am glad you are taking this seriously. I do hope he is ok.
I would do the same thing if my daughter were having these problems. I can't believe all they worry about is catching up with the homework.
best of luck to you.

There is always time for school - your son's health comes first. Keep him out of school. Hope everything turns out O.K.

Sounds like he might have Crohn's disease, and I've heard that can have some pretty serious symptoms till it's in check. No, I don't think you're being unreasonable.
