Do your parents not understand that even if they admit they have assets, they are not REQUIRED to use them to pay for your college? Of course, reporting their assets will lower the amount of financial aid you qualify for, but you won't qualify for ANYTHING if they don't just give up the information. They never have to give you a dime, just fill out the form!

It is not likely that your school will consider you an independent student just because your parents refuse to give their information. Normally you would have to be abandoned, estranged or have had a legal guardian for them to consider a dependency override.

You may have to go to your parents and tell them that you will take out loans to pay for your education completely if they will just fill out the FAFSA so that you are eligible to receive loans. This puts your education completely on your shoulders when it's really your parents' responsibility.

I hate to assume things, but I think your father must be doing something illegal. Otherwise, what would he have to hide?

Are your parents divorced? If so, you only have to file the FAFSA with the parent that you live with. If that's your mother, then it doesn't matter that she doesn't have any assets, it's actually a good thing for you. If you live with your father, good luck with that.

There are other ways to go to college. Try looking at all of the scholarships that the school has to offer. I applied for a scholarship and recieved one for $1000.00 for this year. I am also going to college. The way that we (my husband and I ) pay for my school is that we are on a deferred paymnet plan that I set up at the beginning of each semester ( I commute 4 times a week for a total of 400 miles).
There is also the option of just going to school part time and working full time and save some money to go to school.
My daughter worked the night shift at a local store as a night stocker and then went to school in the morning carrying 12 hours. We both went to a state university which are cheaper than a private college.
Necessity is the mother of invention.
You didn't say how old you are, but perhaps you can talk to your high school guidance office and they can help to look for any and all scholarships that you might be be able to apply for.
If you want this bad enough, you will find a way.

If you are 18 and your parents are unwilling to get involved in any way in supporting your desire for further education, I would suggest that you contact a counselor at the desired school for guidance. That is after all their job. I do not believe that your parent's are required or obligated to help with your further education, so you may be able to apply for financial aid on your own as an adult.
