Start with an acoustic guitar. Why? Your fingers will get better control, strength, and precision. Transfering how to play to an electric is easy as heck, and the bass is 4 strings but same pattern as 4 of the 6 on guitar. This way you can move to electric or bass after you really find out which one is for you.

Guitar is; a bass is the same tuning as a guitar, just not as many strings .
FENDER sales some inexpensive models that are good for beginners. Go to a "Guitar Center" near you or music store and try some out

Really, these are different instruments used for different purposes.A Bass guitar has 4 strings tuned an octave below the bottom 4 strings of an ordinary guitar, and is used to give a pattern of low notes to support the rhythm. An ordinary guitar can be electric or acoustic, and plays rhythm or lead. You need to come to a decision as to which one you want to play. Hope this helps.

get a basic 6 string acoustic. Don't spend a lot on it until you know its really what you want to learn. I had several (and 2 12 string guitars).
I always thought you couldn't get a good sound out of a cheap guitar until a friend who was a professional guitar player picked up my cheapest, nylon string guitar and made it sound like a Gibson.
Also, check out Wholenote. Great for beginners and free
Look for the tuning fork at the bottom left of the page for help with tuning.

Good luck to you.

It really depends on what you want. they are 2 different things. i play an electric guitar. I started out with a Ibanez js40 and it was a very solid guitar and lasted many years

A good idea would be to go to www.ultimate-guitar.com become a member and go post this question under the forums there. The members their are much more experienced than i am and you would get better opinions and suggestions than you would here.

An easier start to guitar is learning the bass, which I think is the mpst underrated guitar of any of them. It's easy to learn and you can get more acquainted to how a guitar works.
You can get some cheap ones by Fender.
