Supposedly I applied for this job via one job site (I use a spam email to send this stuff in case it is fake) and they replied to me today via my regular email (making me think I actually DID apply, as they have my regular email addy)..it's just been awhile and I can't remember, can't find the ad, (I've applied to lots and lots of jobs and this may have been in response to a blind ad, hence I wouldn't know the company name.)

The phone number exists as a land line, can't find any scam info on them online, (but if they are a scam they may have recently changed their name, I don't know), it is work-at-home but their application doesn't ask for typical spam phishing website info (I've seen lots of those phishing scam sites), they pay MONTHLY (this seems odd), no mispellings or weird English phrasing on letter, website fairly new...

How can I tell if this is a scam or legit?

Did they address the email to you by name or not?
If NOT then thats a huge sign that its a scam.

And if they do have a free email address (hotmail, yahoo, gmail etc) then that is also a sign of a scam. Businesses have their own website email address. If it is a website email address, then check out the website from the address.

For future reference, it might be a good idea to write down a list of all the jobs you apply for - company names or ad details if you dont have a name.

What email address did this company use? A free one or does it have company's name? Write the company back and tell them you would like information on the company (their name, where they are located, address etc)-if they are a legitimate company, they should not have a problem with providing you this information. I would wait for an answer before submitting an application.

Did you do a lookup up the phone number to see anything comes up? There are sites online where you can do a reverse phone number search. Have you tried calling the phone number to see how the phone is answered and if they say a business name?

I wouldn't say the monthly pay is odd, I have worked for a company in the past that me paid monthly.

If you have or get a business name, let us know here and maybe we can help you find out if it is a scam or not.

Ring them if you have a phone number (call from a phone booth if you think they might be trying to get your phone number illegally).

Why is monthly pay odd? it's the norm here in Belgium, only temping agencies pay weekly and that's only because they work with weekly contracts.

Mind you, we had an ad like that in the paper a while ago, mum responded to it, the number turned out to be very expensive and in the end, it was just a waste of time as she never heard from them since.

Then again, if they have your regular email, they must have found it somewhere...

Read the job info. If it is something like yes cash checks and receive 10% for forwarding the transactions it is a scam. Use common sense if it sound to good to be true it is, there is no such thing as easy money, or something for nothing.

Meet them at their offices.
Phone up and ask which company you are speaking to, without saying anything else.
Ask them for their web site address and then check it for the phone number and e-mail address you have got.

Many of the work from home deals are scams. Either they get you to pay for training, or to give money showing that you are serious. Be very careful....
