At the heart of all the animosity in the world is hate and evil.. it has nothing to do with religion. Otherwise, people wouldn't kill each other for property, material possessions, another's wife or girlfriend, a car or a country. Many wars were started without one tone of religion surrounding it. Both world wars were all about expansion it had nothing to do with religion. The Jews were involved only because Hitler decided to get rid of them all but he also killed political opposition that had nothing to do with the person's faith.

Because religion is about controlling people. If I, as a representative of my god, demand obedience and loyalty from someone then you cant have them to control. If there are 100 people in a given situation, and I want all of them to revere me and accept me as their leader, the first thing I will do to any who also want the same thing for themselves is denounce my competition as vile. I would focus hatred on them for any and all reasons I could make stick with the ones under my influence. Then as 100 people who see me as half a step short of god is not nearly enough to satisfy an ego that would seek this in the first place, I would send out my 100 to spread the word of my greatness so I can increase the number of people that revere me. And if all the people in this country are mine, know that this will never be enough. I will demand that all the people in YOUR country should now serve me! If it should be accomplished that all do serve me, that will still not be enough, I command that you have children and dedicate them to me! enough example?
the heart of the answer is greed, vanity and pride. In other words...
I WANT IT ALL BECAUSE I DESERVE IT!
Response to Lucky S: Seems to me that if you look throughout history, most wars are fought over land, power, and money.....
all you have done is itemize the goals of the religion.
its like saying "No i don't want a sandwich, just bring me meat and cheese between two slices of bread"

I think the answer to that is because so many "religions" focus on rules, & being "right" in the guidlines of their religion. It's hard for some people to see outside of their "box". I was like that for along time until a friend of mine said to me, "not everyone believes the way you do." I spent some time thinking about that and opened my mind to that idea & it has lead me on a search for spirituality. It doesn't hurt to learn as much as you can about any & all religions. they all share a common thread, Love & a "Source", or whatever you want to call it. If you study different religions you will see that they all come from human interpretation. So it's my feeling that that is why there are so many differences. None of us truely have the answers to the many questions of religions. It is a shame we all can't agree to disagree.

Because it is based on faith.
Because of this, there is no way to disprove religious belief, and when you try to do it, the faithful person feels like you are taking their hope away. This causes problems.
Also religion is typically tied directly to a person's ego. Religious people are brought up believing that they were created uniquely by God, and that he has a specific purpose for their lives. When they hear other people telling them that God doesn't exist, or that their God is not the real God, it hits them directly in the ego. Afterall if God doesn't exist, then they aren't special, and loose purpose and meaning in life.
Religion is very dangerous because of this.

All of the Abrahamic religions are a problem to the peace of this world.
Each religion claims to be the only way to God. That is a total lie.
Since each are based on lies they must then kill off the other because they are a threat to each other.
It is completely ludicrous.

Not all religion is. Religio-political fusions are. Only dominionist religions like Christianity and Islam tend to be the big problems. They have much in common with communism and statism, in that they want a monoculture as long as it is *their* monoculture, and will actively demonize any dissident.
