Yes, I know I posted on seniors because I am one. I wanted to know what seniors think about this new movie that is supposedly "anti-Christian." I have already received two emails about it. The shows stars Nicole Kidman and the trailer looks good, but it is being said it is far more damaging than Harry Potter. I don't understand the whole concept. It is a fantasy movie.
Please share you opinions if you have heard of anyone mentioning this movie. The author is supposedly an atheist. That is all I know, so I am not giving any advice; just wondering what you have heard.

I do agree that fantasy is just fantasy. I also enjoyed Harry Potter, Bewitched, Cinderella, Snow White, (all fantasy) and I appreciate all of your responses.
I was just curious because I don't understand why this is being rallied against except to keep the young uneducated ones from seeing it.

No I haven't. I haven't heard it was damaging either though.
I do think a movie is just that a movie. Fantasy.
I took both my grand kids to see Harry Potter and couldn't say that was damaging. I thought it was just plain fun, and so did the grand kids. If raised with belief in God a movie that is just fantasy won't change any of that.

"The Golden Compass, a fantasy film starring Nicole Kidman that is scheduled to be released into theaters on 7 December 2007, has been drawing fire from concerned Christians. The film is based on Northern Lights (released in the U.S. as The Golden Compass), the first offering in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy of children's books, a series that follows the adventures of a streetwise girl who travels through multiple worlds populated by witches, armor-plated bears, and sinister ecclesiastical assassins to defeat the oppressive forces of a senile God."

I got that e-mail, too. I read the books and don't remember anything anti-Christian in them..The author is a confessed athiest.. I don't have a problem with the books at all. "The Golden Compass" is the first book in the trilogy and was wonderful. The trailers make the special effects look promising. Go, see and judge for yourself. I don't think Harry Potter is at all damaging either, though so take my opinion with a grain of salt if you must.

The trailers I've seen look akin to Harry Potter, Lord of the rings, Dune and other such. Personally, I don't see it shaking the foundations of Christianity. There's a point when we all have to separate the real from fantasy -- fantasy is the one
that is entertaining and somebody/some animation has to take all the actions. If one's children can't differentiate, they're to young to go to movies or some body needs shrink help (maybe the parents).

I have also received a few emails about this movie and how it is anti-Christian. Your statement about it being a "fantasy" movie is just that. It is a fantasy movie. It is just a movie, nothing more and nothing less. Movies are made to entertain and make money --- period.
If you want to see this movie, then by all means do so, with the disclaimer that reads: this is entertainment, this is not about turning into an Atheist or getting rid of God.

I have, havent researched it, but its an interesting subject, the debate over it I mean. Does the media influence young minds? Definitely and research proves it does. One would hope parents discuss with their children what they watch when it come sot moves, tv etc.
The Da Vinci code or however its spelled was the biggest pile of bull I have ever had the misfortune to view I must say, as a theory its so full of holes who would know where to begin? A theory based on an alleged painting done not at the time of Christ but 100's of years later and whoever dreamed up this crap thinks we are dumb enough to accept that as an indisputable fact? I hope no one could possibly be that dumb.
Someone step on your tail wooley? I usually get a good chuckle out of your sardonic but not unkind humour .. you seem "off" today, hope all's well with you

I heard about it too. They say that Phillip Pullman (the novelist) has stated that, "Atheism suggests a degree of certainty that I'm not quite willing to accede. I suppose, technically, you'd have to put me down as an agnostic. But if there is a God, and he is as the Christians describe him, then he deserves to be put down and rebelled against. As you look back over the history of the Christian church, it's a record of terrible infamy and cruelty and persecution and tyranny. How they have the bloody nerve to go on Thought for the Day and tell us all to be good when, given the slightest chance, they'd be hanging the rest of us and flogging the homosexuals and persecuting the witches." Since he wrote the story line, I guess that is why its controversial and people find something dark behind the story. If you just view it for what it is, fantasy/adventure entertainment, it should be interesting at best.

Have not heard anything about this movie. But remember the saying" it is only a movie, it is only a movie." so dont believe what you hear or see and just experience watching the show. If you go that is. From your description and your responders it does not sound like something I will go to see.

Movies and fantasy books are nothing more than escapism. They appeal to a lot of us. Only the religious freaks try to label enjoyable stuff as anti-this or anti-that because just like trolls here they can get no satisfaction unless they are putting down some one or something.

I'd read the book for myself; rather than rely on chain-e-mails. The movie will be out around December 7th, so there is time to check out the book from a library.
