You'll have to be more specific. If it's a family member, it's probably OK. If it's a business relation or a prospective suitor, then overly lavish gifts should be declined, rather than returned. It is much ruder to return a gift you have already accepted than to decline it politely in the first place, and explain that it is too much and you can't accept it. But how expensive of a gift are we talking about here, and what are the circumstances?

Some people would and some wouldnt. Do you feel by accepting the gift you are obligated to that person? Is it a family member. Would the person be insulted if you gave the gift back? These are the questions you need to ask yourself before you decide.

Yes, because acceptance implies a close relationship that may not exist. It would be necessary in that case to send the person a message. Very wealthy people sometimes are guilty of bad manners in this regard. Gifts of something that is very personal in nature should also be refused.

If I thought a gift was too expensive (or inappropriate) I would refuse the gift at the time it was presented. Once you accept it, it would be considered rude to return it to the giver.
I'm sorry if that's not the answer you were hoping for....but it is the correct one.
Hope that helps.

It would depend on who gave it to me, what the occasion was and their motivation for giving it to me. If it was someone who was interested in me and I didn't feel the same, I would definitely give it back. If it was someone I know couldn't afford it, I would definitely give it back. Other than that, I'd have to go situation by situation.

I denied a gift for my son from his aunt and uncle on his father's side because it was too expensive. $2000.00 is a lot of money, and I honestly don't think I would have denied the gift, which was an invitation for him to go with their family to Disney, if his aunt wouldn't have told me how much it was costing for each of them. Since she mentioned price, I turned it down. I think it was bad etiquette for her to mention price, but that's just me.

it would depend on more than just the price. also why this person got something so extravagant in the first place. do they want something from me, or is it a pure gesture? that would matter more to me.
