Melissa P, I honestly think it's a little sad to think this way. I feel kind of badly for you if your only motivation to live and enjoy life is the idea of an "afterlife" of some kind. I just want to reach through the internet and hug you!
The beauty and magic of life is a pretty good motivation to keep on living. Statistically, it's so unlikely for life to exist on Earth, let alone for you and I to exist out of all the trillions of potential human beings who could be born. What an incredible thing!
Why not make your own purpose in life? What is something you care deeply about? What changes can you effect during your life span? Each person has the potential to make a change in this world that just might make things better for others - humans, animals, whatever you care most about. Perhaps you haven't discovered the purpose of YOUR life yet, but you are a thinking creature capable of creative actions (yet another statistically rare thing - how lucky you are!). You have the power to decide your own purpose, and to make your own life meaningful and impactful.
Instead of feeling depressed about this, if you look at it as a grand opportunity to make the world a nicer place for others, it becomes motivating and beautiful. Most atheists do not see life as depressing and a waste because there's no god and no grand-designed purpose. We see it as a beautiful opportunity to make our lives have a purpose that we love and that motivates us to be people who can make a difference...even if it's only in a small way.
A person does not need a myth like "god" to find beauty and motivation. Just consider how lucky you are to be here, and how rare you are, and how short your life is, how fast it will go by. What a wonderful thing life is! Make your own purpose, and enjoy it. :)

I always find it astounding that this particular question gets asked. I live life, it doesn't have any more purpose than I give it, but I find ways that my life is meaningful. I love seeing smiles on other peoples faces, I love making their day because in turn it makes my day. Life is beautiful and it doesn't need an abstract idea like deities to validate ones existence; I find it rather sad that some cannot love life without that.

there is no purpose but There is a God and that is why humans have always prayed to someone, either to a man made god or to some image of to the real GOD. humans were created to worship God and so they are drawn to worship someone and the devil will do whatever possible to deceive and to misslead people from finding the truth

what, so are you saying your life so meaningless that you only want to live if there is a carrot dangling in front of your face? What ever happened to the journey being its own reward? If your not happy with your life as it is now, maybe you should start seeking to change it now instead of waiting until your dead to attempt to get a reward that you have no evidence that you'll get.

if there is a god and our only purpose is to get to heaven, then what's the purpose of existing? why don't we repent for a few years or do whatever to qualify to get into heaven, then have someone push us off a cliff
see works both ways

You need the promise of a god to make your life worthwhile? Pretty sad and pitiful

"why are we here?" is the fundamental philosophical question every philosopher has thought of since the dawn of time. don't feel bad if you cannot figure it out.
i hope you are open minded to seek for the truth instead of latch on to someone else's.

A healthy mind in a healthy body, doing what it loves, is the meaning of life.

Why do you think evolution has given you a fear of death? If you didn't have one, a realist would be quite likely to bail out.
