I want to make the traditional roast turkey, but any recipes and side dishes such as brussel sprouts and parsnips would be great! Also, I am not sure what to make for a starter. If I have made a Christmas pudding, do I need to add alcohol, or can I leave it for 2 months wrapped in cling film? Any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated!

As little as possible......that is not a joke.

Prepare as much as possible in advance.

You will need alcohol for a traditional pud but cook it now and store until the day - the longer you leave it the better it will taste.

Starters : soup (make and freeze), egg mayo with salad, prawn cocktail sprinkled with paprika, served with brown bread and butter, black pudding or chinese chicken salads.

Side dishes - brussel sprouts with fried bacon bits and onions (yum) cauliflower cheese, Honey glazed Parsnips, buttered carrots, minted peas.

Ohhhhhh I'm hungry now.....

Turkey is for Thanksgiving.

Standing rib roast, or prim-rib, or a large ham cooked in the oven is for Christmas.

A turkey dinner one month apart is too soon.

By the way, most people do not like brussel sprouts or parsnips.

If by Christmas pudding you mean Plum Pudding.....it can be frozen and taken out of the freezer and put in the bottom of the fridge for defrosting the night before your dinner

We usually have either pumpkin pancakes or, recently, bacon and egg lasagna. If you're not experienced, you could always go with the old standby bacon and eggs, toss in toast and add some fresh fruit. And, if you belonged to our family, several gallons of coffee. let me look at my recipe book. Or you could do a breakfast pizza: 1 tube (8 oz) refrigerated crescent rolls, or pizza crust 3 eggs 2 tbls milk 1/8 tsp pepper 2 cups finely chopped cooked ham, or bacon, or sausage 1 cup frozen shredded hash browns 1 cup (4 oz) shredded Cheddar cheese 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese Unroll crescent dough and place on ungreased 12" pizza pan. Press onto bottom and up the sides, gently but firmly sealing the seams and perforations. Bake at 375 F for 5 minutes. In a bowl, beat eggs, milk and pepper. Sprinkle meat, hashbrowns and cheddar over crust. Then carefullly pour egg mixture over the cheese. Sprinkle with Parmesan, then bake at 375 F for 25 to 30 minutes or until eggs are completely set. Cool slightly, and may garnish with a sprinkle of parsley flakes. Or whatever suits you. Yield--6 servings.

Melon is always a nice easy light starter for Christmas dinner. We tend to side dishes of carrots steamed then glazed with butter and a little dash of orange juice, peas cooked with onions and finely chopped bacon, brussels are lovely mixed with chestnuts too. I hate to say I usually buy my Christmas pud and add a bit more brandy to it.......

my family has always done an exact repeat of thanksgiving on christmas eve. that got boring, so we started doing a beef tenderloin with a cranberry sauce. then we do side dishes like mashed potatoes, corn or green beans, etc.

for christmas day, we do a breakfast casserole and omelets and lounge all day!
