The german submarines were sinking our merchant ships, then they sunk the Lusitania, a passenger ship with Americans on board. That prompted a declaration of war in 1916 but troops weren't sent until 1917 and didn't get into combat until May of 1918. Then in five and a half months, they kicked the crap out of the Germans.

First the Arch Duke got assasinted by terrorists, not the same ones we deal with today. Then that caused a war between two nations, but back then almost every country in Europe had an alliance with another. So, it caused a huge war between two sides.

The 3 main things that caused WW1 were:
1) The Assasination of Archduke Ferdinand
2) The rise of Nationalism & Imperialism.
3) The building up of the Military strength due to science advances, and a building up of the Military Aliances.

In the 1800's, an idea swept across the continent that helped bring about the Great War.

It was Nationalism - the belief that loyalty to a person's nation and its political and economic goals come before anything else!

The first world war began in August 1914, triggered by the assassination of the Austrian archduke, Franz Ferdinand and his wife, by Bosnian revolutionary Gavrilo Princip.

The recent ethnic cleansing in the Balkans demonstrates what a hot blooded powder keg that area was, when an anarchist asassin shot the Arch Duke Ferdinand.

Europe had been at war before. France's dictator Napoleon had tried to conquer the whole continent, all the way to Russia, before Germany!

A number of alliances had been signed by countries between the years 1879 and 1914.

These were important because they meant that some countries had no option but to declare war if one of their allies. declared war first.

Imperialism is when a country takes over new lands or countries and makes them subject to their rule.

By 1900 the British Empire extended over five continents and France had control of large areas of Africa.

With the rise of industrialism countries needed new markets.

The amount of lands 'owned' by Britain and France increased the rivalry with Germany who had entered the scramble to acquire colonies late and only had small areas of Africa.

War had a major role in achieving nation strength in Italy and Germany.

But also nationalism weakened the eastern European Countries of Austria,Hungary, Russia, and Turkey.

They ruled many national groups that urged for independence.

The Balkan Peninsula or the "Powder Keg of Europe" because tensions there threatened to start a major war.

Rivalry for control of the Balkans added to the tensions that erupted into World War!

Some fellow named Archy Duke shot an ostrich because he was hungry.

Perhaps if you were a little more specific... were you referring to all parties entering WW1, or one specific nation?

assuming you're talking about America: we were unofficially supporting britain while she, france and russia fought germany, and austria-hungary. then the zimmermann note and the lucitania incidents occured. We also needed to upgrade our military, and of course the profits from the first major conflict of the industrial age enters into the equation. Keeping in mind the south was still not fully recovered from the civil war.

One reason why Wilson said we needed to go to war was because German U-boats were attacking our shipping and cargo ships, even passenger ships like the Lusitania; the second was the assassination of Arch Duke Ferdinand and his wife from Austria and they were assassinated by the group called the Black Hand.

the powers in europe were not only connected by treaties ( if so and so attacks you, i'll come to your aide sorta stuff) but they were connected by marriage. so when the archduke of austria was assassinated. most of the powers were dragged into the war. the reason the US got involved was after the sinking of the Lusitania and a bunch of american lost their lives. the lusitania was torpedoed by a german sub. also the british were putting lots of political pressure on the US to come in and help britian
