Shotguns are not as powerful as shown in movies, I would feel comfortable standing at 75 yards being shot at by a shotgun. It feels like BB guns unloading on you and that's about it. A .357 Mag would be way more intimidating. Now i'm curious because you probably don't know this because you haven't figured out how to phrase things correctly.
A shotgun can use buckshot, birdshot, slugs and "Magnum slugs" You should probably figure out what you're trying to ask or you should specify that it isn't a comparison between a .22 Magnum or a .32 Magnum or a 10mm Magnum. There are lots of different calibers with the prefix and suffix of Magnum

This comparison can't be made as is. For example, there is .22 Magnum which is a small rifle caliber and then there are huge rifle calibers like .458 Winchester Magnum. A standard 2.75" 12 gauge shotgun loading (slug) will have more energy than a 22 magnum at the muzzle.
.458 is going to have way more energy than standard 2.75" 12 gauge slug loadings
Finally to throw in an added variable, Shotguns also have magnum loadings. The 12 gauge has both 3" Magnum and 3.5" Magnum. You would really need to compare specific calibers in a ballistics table to know which one has more energy at a given distance to determine which one is most powerful.

A low base shotgun shell, or a high base Magnum Shotgun shell.
A shotgun verses a Magnum rifle?
A shotgun verses a Magnum pistol?
We need to know what we are comparing.
Which goes faster a red one or a blue one...
Your update added not additional info. You have only illiminated the shotgun vs shotgun portion of the question.

There are many different types of shotgun shells and cartridges with a magnum name. As for which has more powerful, most shotgun loads are going to be stronger than most handgun loads, and there are rifle loads able to exceed, by far, any shotgun load.
The highest magnum pistol cartridge I know of is the .500 S&W Magnum, and it produces around 2500ft/lbs with high power loadings.
The highest shotgun load I know of is Core-Lokt Ultra sabot producing 3000ft/lbs of energy.
The largest magnum rifle I can find is the .505 Rimless Magnum, which produces slightly over 6000ft/lbs.

it depends. for a .44 Rem. Magnum, the muzzle energy is 1360J. if you compare the magum to a .410 shotgun cartridge, which has a muzzle energy of 990J, than the magnum is definetly more powerful. but if you compare the magnum to a 12 gauge Hi-Pressure, which has the muzzle energy of 3334J, then the shotgun is definelty more powerful. i would say that in most cases the shogun is more powerful because most people use either a 12 gauge or 16 gauge, and both of the calibers have a muzzle energy that is greater than 2000J

Are you aware that there are magnum shotgun loads? Don't worry about power, worry about learning to use the firearm properly. It won't matter how powerful the thing is if you can't hit the broad side of a barn!
