In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
— John McCrae

It relates to wars in general, to the fact that though men who were alive and so full of hope a short time before are now dead, casualties of the war and the fact that after war and death, peace must take place if there is to be an improvement.

It also hopes that the sacrifice of the dead, mean something to those who remain, and for them to fight until the enemy is defeated and it hopes they (the dead) will not be forgotten by future generations, who when the see the red poppies remember they shed their blood and lives for freedom

The poem does not relate to the Iraq war. It is a commentary of the dead in WW1 who died in the fields of Belgium. One can take anything written about the dead in battle at any time in history and relate it to any conflict.

Dismissing the sacrifice of those who have died does nothing but insult their memory, particularly if one does so for no reason other than to gain petty political one-upmanship at home. In no way does this honor the dead, their families, or their sacrifices.
