Does it annoy you when people approach you speaking a different language? I also find that when you tell these people that you only speak English they seem to be annoyed. This could be a problem that only New Yorkers face but I dont think so.

I do not mean when people speak there language to each other, I mean when they assume that you speak their language. Many spanish speaking people (at least in NY) not only assume you speak spanish but get annoyed when you dont. Of course I dont care if they speak to each other in whatever language they want to. Speak pig latin for all I care..........but speak to me in english.

No, It does not bother me. When I am in a foreign country, should it bother those people if I don't speak their language? I hope not!
I love the myriad of languanges in the world. It adds spice and color to our existance.
Perhaps it does bother only New Yorkers...but then, New Yorkers speak a different langauage from the rest of world...including different from that of America!

So Many Languages Are Spoken In This World And There Is Tourism Around The World, So Some people Will be Bound To Speak Different Languages...We Should All Learn More Languages So We Can Communicate With Others Easily!x

No, that is California, not New York! [no offense]
In Cali, you will always, whether in the workplace, school, or grocery store, hear someone nearby speaking Punjab or Spanish, & at times you get self-conscious, especially when you start to think that they may be talking about YOU! I feel awkward about since I can't always tell what they're saying, so yes .. it does bother me ..

actually it is America, that why there are so many different people here! u make it sound like this is a bad thing, i feel it would b boring as hell if we were all just alike! it doesnt annoy me when someone speaks to me in another language just to answer ur question!

we get visitors here from other places and I have lived in many nations, and did not always get a chance to brush up on my arabic, spanish, russian, german, and such before I left with 3 days notice I was going
so what is the issue here?

No it doesn't bother me, unless there is more than one and they start conversing with each other and starting back at me.
