Everywhere I look I see crosses on churches, around people's necks, different verses on bumperstickers, and stained glass depictions of the birth or crucifixion. If these aren't idols, why are they when compared to say an ankh or pentacle or statue of Bastet?

Its not the bumper sticker as an object, it is the idea that someone is so enthralled with the idea that they feel they need an outward expression instead of being a living example (kind of like what that have in that bible book)

Lets clarify, why is a praying at a cross/altar not idolotry when any other deity worship is? yeah yeah, i know what the first commandment says, but thats not the point right now. I want to get to the bottom of the hypocracy. Why is it acceptable when they are the ones throwing labels?

Come to Australia to have a holiday away from this you won't see any of this hooey especially bumper stickers on cars it's illegal. This might just be a fad like the yo yo coming back every six years or like the bling and dog tags rappers wear.

surely not all Christians are idolaters. IMO real Christians seek to practice what they believe Jesus preached. humble and nonjudgmental, giving in charity, caring for the ill and poor, speaking truth for truth sake and praying sincerely without making a show of it.
but then there's the kind of Christians who worship the Bible and the power they imagine it gives them. they worship the social status of appearing to be a devoted Christian while they give little that doesn't immediately provide a return for themselves.
PS. wearing or displaying crosses and other religious symbols doesn't necessarily indicate a worship of those articles.

I don't see a problem with bumper stickers, or crosses, or stained glass windows. Those are different mediums in which people express their faith. I don’t pray to a cross, or worship a bumper sticker.

As many have answered, they are symbols.
Think of crosses, crucifixes, icons, statues, symbols, vestments etc. the same way as a photo of a loved one. It is not the picture that you love, but the person whose image is portrayed in the photo.
Christians DO NOT pray to the cross, they pray to Christ that is represented by that cross. If this is idolatry, then we should destroy all our family pictures as well.
Your friend in Christ,
Mark

Yeah, just ask Mel Gibson about all those money-making "graven images".
Or how about all the televangelists who make people able to walk again by dabbing their foreheads?
And what about that old "In God We Trust" on the dollar bill... If I was a christian, I would think that's the wrong place for such a statement....

I guess I'd rather call them symbols of identity. When I see actual worship of bumperstickers then I'll see your point.

They also have the bible as an idol and many would believe it over God.

we need people like you to go out and tell them they are doing wrong. I agree with you it is wrong and Catholics do many things that sometimes make you wonder why they do it
