Abraham (born about 3800 years ago) is often considered the first Jew. It was he who first entered into a covenant with God that became the basis of Judaism.

As a formal religion with texts and ritual, that began at the revelation at Sinai about 3400 years ago. It was then that the Ten commandments (indeed the entire Torah and Oral Law) was given to the Israelites fleeing Egypt.
