RE:
what does est mean in french?

It can mean 'is', in which case it is pronounced "eh", or it can mean 'east', in which case it is pronounced "est".

It can sometimes also mean 'has', when it is used as an auxiliary verb to form the present perfect tense (passé composé) with certain verbs (mostly verbs of motion):
Thus: Il est monté = He has gone up/climbed up;
Elle est descendue = She has gone down.

It means (he) is or (she) is. It's a form of the verb "Etre" which is "to be".
Je suis (I am)
Tu es (you familiar are)
Il est (he is)
Elle est (she is)
Vous ette (you formal are)
ils sont (they masculine are)
elles sont (they feminine are).

Bonne chance!
