I'm an office manager for a small company, and our computer area is a small office in the back of a warehouse area. My job involves taking a lot of calls from customers, making quite a few calls to vendors/customers, and daily tasks that call for accounting and reconciliation. However, it just seems that some people can't help but make noise - turning up the radio in the warehouse so that it's loud even in my office, singing along in even louder voices, and coming into the office shouting (about nothing, sometimes just "Good morning" or even random noises), before checking to see if anyone's on the phone. I've noticed this phenomenon in other places, too. Why are some people just "loud"? And how can I successfully get them to quiet down, without offending anyone? It causes me great stress!

Bring this up at the next office staff meeting. Let the others know that the loud voices and noises are disrupting important business calls.

Implement a new office policy: Can you post a friendly reminder on the computer area office door? Something to the effect: "Please enter quietly, phone calls in progress. Thank you" ?

As far as the radio in the warehouse, can you coordinate with the warehouse supervisor? Let him/her know that the noise is causing a problem. It may be helpful to list some specific occasions when loudness adversely affected an important call.

I feel for you. This is going to be a touchy situation. People are not going to welcome the news that they are too loud. Tact and kindness will be the path to success.

Hope I've helped.

Speak with your supervisor about the specific reasons you need less noise in order to perform your job duties. Post a sign to help remind others that there are people trying to make telephone calls and requesting a quiet atmosphere.

It is unlikely that the people who you find offensive are even aware of their noise level. Those who may compromise your ability to do your job well need to be addressed, but otherwise you will just have to tolerate the loud people.

Tell them to quiet down because you frequently talk to business people on the phone. Also you can put a sign on your door.

Put up a small sign that states simply "Please use your indoor voice, I am on the phone".
