Some PS3s can play some PS2 games.

The 20GB and 60GB PS3s can play almost all PS2 games, but these models have been discontinued. There may be some 60GB models at stores, but once those run out, that's it. Sony is not making anymore.

The 80GB PS3 can play some PS2 games - you can check their PS3 website for a list of which games seem to work. There have been no updates for this model, so what you see is you get...

The new 40GB PS3 can't play any PS2 games - ever. Sony has said they will not be releasing an update to enable this feature on this model.

I'm assuming that future models of the PS3 will be similar to the 40GB model - unable to play any PS2 games. So, if this is an important feature for you, either hold onto your PS2, or do everything you can to buy the older 20GB or 60GB model (maybe off eBay or something.)
