I make up a hamper with M&S goodies - Biscuits, tins of chicken in white sauce, salmon, marzipan fruits, shortbread, humbugs - all the old time classics from a name our Grandparents all love - but may not be able to get themselves. My Nana loves it and really appreciates it , like a rare treat - but most practical at the same time. She has a house adorned with potted plants, ornaments and cardigans galore - and we have brought her all of the modern gadgets like dvd, tumble dryer - you name it - So, the simplicity of good food now wins every time!!

I turn 55 this July, and like almost anyone else would enjoy something that reflects my interests or perhaps something I wouldn't buy for myself--something that is luxurious, but not necessarily expensive. Facials, for example, for most women fall into this category, but so would a bouquet of flowers. You could also treat your friend to lunch, or buy her a good book (or purchase a gift certicate towards a book). Unless you are really close to your friend and know how she would take any gag gifts, don't over emphasize her age.

Something that older people love is to spend time with younger people and to be wanted. Does she need any straightening out around the house? Ironing? Cleaning? Painting? Basically just being with her. Ask her about her life when she was your age and what did she wear. When did she get her first short haircut? What about her first kiss? Did she have a favorite school subject or teacher? You don't have to spend anything but just enjoy her presence. Too soon she will not be here but she'll remember you.

Gather ols photos of when she was younger and her children and grandchildren and get to Best Buy or something and buy one fo those picture frames that can hold about 200 photos. She would love that, she could look at ehr family any time she wants.

My grandma's not alive anymore, but she used to love to get gift cards for restaurants (She loved Red Lobster) that she could use to go to lunch with her friends. She was a very active 80 year old.

Why not treat her to lunch at a really nice restaurant. Not sure where you are, but if in the UK, try and find a Betty's restaurant near you! My nana used to love it. Its really old style, quaint, tea, scones, meals etc. They do fantastic teas and coffees....

A scrapbook of photos, dinner either out or home cooked, how about a video of her talking about her past? We had a suprise party for my mom's 70th, and everyone gave her a memory card (of what they remember about her) or pictures.
For my aunt's 90th, we asked her to talk about how things were when she was young, what she remembered about things, and advise for the future. We taped the whole thing.
Not only was it a chance for her to talk and us listen, but a chance for us to remember her when she passed away.

Usually, which too long for me. I think it depends on the guy and also his face though. Certain guys may pull off long hair and other folks can't.
