NASA has a S.W.A.T. Team?

I googled the word swat team and i came across this article that talks about the Kennedy Space Center and their very SWAT team, i still don't get why they need one?

Did you know that a fueled space shuttle is a very dangerous thing? Imagine a terrorist group deciding to drive up to it and detonate a large bomb close by. Close enough to cause the whole shuttle to go up.

First of all, that is very dangerous. It would be a pretty devastating explosion. Odds are, there will be people killed in something like that. Also, the SRBs would ignite and possible launch with a wild trajectory and who knows where they would land.

Next up, you are talking about an investment of billions of dollars. The local bank will hire security guards to move $10,000. An investment of billions requires a pretty hefty security force.

Finally, the space shuttle and NASA are very public targets. Not only to terrorists, but also to various nutjobs who decide that they want to be famous by doing something infamous. NASA would need to be able to handle all sorts of tactical situations. Bomb threats, hostages, even armed invasion. A SWAT team makes perfect sense. Keep them around and keep them trained and they will be right there the second that something bad starts to happen.

Easy. Consider what a great target a Space Shuttle would be for ,or people, needing attention to "further" their cause. They need a SWAT team for the same reasons as any police force.

Would you want someone to just be able to come and go as they please in the Space Center...
