I have a 9 week old Akita. I work 5 days a week. She is in her cage (good size cage for her size) for about 4 hours in the morning then I come home for lunch for an hour, she does her thing then we spend time together, then it's back in the cage for another 3 1/2 hours to 4 hours. Then when I'm home we spend time in an open yard area. She only goes in cage when I'm away.

That's not a bad scedule at all.. Considering that you come home for lunch and let her out... As long as she seems to be doing well I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Kudos to you coming home at lunch to let her out, many people dont. As long as you spend lots of time playing with her at night and on the weekends you should be fine. Definitely start her in puppy classes somewhere, I hate petsmarts training methods but the classes are great for socialization. Since she's an Akita make sure you get her out into the world and around as many people and dogs as you possibly can while she's a puppy. Be careful and make sure she has all her shots but as soon as she does get her out there. Crate training is also a great idea. Sounds like your doing everything right! And ignore the people who obviously dont understand an 8hour workday is NORMAL and many people have dogs and work to support their families and dogs.

BTW Akitas are in my top 5 fav breeds. If only they didnt shed so much lol!

Four hours is probably about the upper limit of her ability to hold it, but as long as she's not peeing in her crate, you're OK. At this age, I wouldn't want to push it longer than that, however. One thing you might consider doing is to leave a radio or TV on while you're gone. That will help get her accustomed to all sorts of sounds and noises. I know one breeder who has a TV in her whelping room that stays tuned to the History Channel, so the puppies get used to hearing bangs and booms and all sorts of noises. She will encounter these when you start taking her into public places, so getting them used to it at this age is a good idea. Just keep the volume fairly low.
It won't be long before you can take her out with you to begin exploring the big outer world. You can't do too much socialization, especially this breed.

with puppies after you accclimate them to being alone starting at 15min at a time and working the time up then having the ability too go out to potty about four time a day for dogs that are over 30 pounds is o.k. for dogs that are under 30 pounds the vet and shelter recconmend that they need to be able to go outside and potty every four hours. I leave my adult dog alone for 8 hour max days but only four days a week and he is on a shedule that he knows and understands. for a puppy four hour would be my max amount of time If crate trainning, but if they are loose in the house watch out that being alone isn't messing up with the potty trainning buisness. make sure she always has fresh water food and toys so she doesn't get destructive and a window that she can look out of helps

That's sounds great. My own dogs had a schedule like that for several years. You are home in the middle of the day. Your dog seems to have a lot of play time. Don't listen to some that would put you down for working and having a dog. Most of us have to work so we have the best for our family's, that includes our pets.

i have to agree with the 1st answer. that is not a bad schedule at all and the fact that you come home on your lunch is good.
dont listen to people who tell you that what your doing is bad. I have 5 dogs
I work 2 jobs and also have a family, they are all in a crate when no one is here. i take time in between the two jobs to make sure they get out and the rest of the family pitches in for excersize.
I also bring them to work with me

I think your schedule is fine. Usually dogs sleep during the day, so being in a cage is fine.

exercise pens may be a better option if she has to be alone for so long on a daily basis. it gives her more room to move around, yet she is safe and confined.
something like in the link attached.

I echo the first answer. Sounds like you are being very sensible and showing your pooch some love. Don't forget that dogs love to snooze and their crate is their safe place - a real comfort for them.
