1. "Labradoodles" aren't actually recognized by an legitimate registry. If you're asking why this is the one everyone mentions, I guess it's because it was this designer mutt that really began the whole fad (although the "cockapoo" has been around for years).
2. The "Labradoodle" is NOT a breed. Nor are any of the other designer mixes. They are just that...mixes. Mutts. Crossing two purebreds and coming up with a cutesy name does not a breed make.

Labradoodles aren't a breed. They are not recognized by any registry. They are just mixed breed dogs that unscrupulous people make to sell to the gullible dog buying public.

It depends on your area. Where I am "puggles" are all the rage. AKC doesn't recognize any of these designer dogs, they are all mixed breeds. Expensive mutts.
A breed takes years to be legit. It requires consistancy in looks, temperment and quality that gets proven litter after litter. Throwing Fifi and Fido in the backyard and breeding them doesn't make the puppies anything but more mixed breed puppies that the shelters are already full of.

The term "Designer Breed" is just for people who are ashamed that they love a mutt, haha. I have a golden/lab mix, and I absolutely love her and could care less that she's not a purebred or on some list of fancy breeds.

I don't know when does Labradoodles being recognized as a breed. Same as maltipoo, goldendoodle and morkies, they just all mutts. They are not being recognized as "breeds" yet. These backyard breeders probably make that wish everyday.

What makes you think that labradoodles are a recognized breed??
Cockapoos have been around a lot longer and are considered a mixed breed just like labradoodles are.

Humm widely reconized in dog circles: the crossbred
"Alaskian Husky" (you see them in the Idenerod)
"lurcher" (sighthound cross)- 100 yrs of history here
nonped whippet racer
"coldblood greyhound"
"coonhound racer"
Plus I know there are a ton of crossbred herders
Now the average LAYMAN may only know the labradoodle because of the publicity - why they got the publicity - ??? why did Paris Hilton???

They are not recognized by any legitimate registry. It is just a stupid made up name for a mixed breed dog.
They can't become their own breed because there is no established standard, no established breed club and no established breeding program. They do not breed "true" meaning one dog may be more poodle-like and another more lab-like. It will be a long time or possibly never before they can become an established breed of their own.

Recognized by who? A labradoodle is still just a mutt, along with Yorkie-Chi's, Morkie-Poo's and all the other nonsense created by backyard breeders to make a profit off the ignorance of those who want a "designer" dog.

They just get more publicity. The Cockapoo has its own breed club that have completed their F2 Generation of cockapoo to cockapoo breeding. Really the Cockapoo is further along than the labradoodle, the labradoodle was developed by australians for the blind with allergies. Correct me if Im wrong but Im pretty sure that the project has been abandoned. Labradoodles were the first widely advertised mix.
