I've taken KSW, it really is just Hapkido. Supposely it was the "Royal martial arts" (Based on Hwarang warriors) but i find those stories alittle hard to swallow. It is a pretty good mix of self defense, with kicks, punches, joint locks and throws. But like everyone will tell you, its the person not the art. All the arts are good, what makes the difference is how hard the person trains/practice. It takes between 5 -6 years to become a black belt in KSW.

Kuk Sool is one of the 'original' martial art styles in Korea having been founded over 500 years ago. Tae Kwon Do was founded in 1950.

Almost all Korean styles of fighting emphasized strength and kicking and high jumps. Kuk Sool teaches sword fighting always using 'two swords'.

Kuk Sool is a good style for open terrain on dirt and soft ground while wearing boots or heavy work shoes.

Kuk Sool is a good out-door style and not an 'urban' style with crowds of people and tight environments (apartments, buildings, rooms, alleys, restaraunts, bars, etc.).

It all depends on the martial artist. I've seen some Kuk Sool Won people that couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag. I've seen other's that will hit you and lock you up before you know what's going on. It depends on how much you train and how dedicated you are.

the weapons aspect is very traditional, the sword fighting looks practical because the way the master demonstrates his attacks, it looks like attack, deflect and so on. but if youre looking for a practical martial art, what is the meaning of self defense? i think the best self defense is more like a self offense. in defense, you assume a defensive position. today you wont find a sword but you may find a tree branch or a steel pole laying there i believe whatever you can find is advantageous in a fight. weapons are used to make the fight even, you dont go into war without a weapon. i believe all martial arts hold their own specific place in all places. self defense although are more specially oriented to things like krav maga. krav maga is a good foundation to knowledge to self defense because they give you all the foundation to self defense. for example lets say you know martial arts that deal only with swords, well in a attack against you, typically, there are trained human predators that usually attack when they have done it many times before. it ll go like this, you walk home or to your car. a man follows you but you dont know because it is instinct to not give away your position to the prey like lions do to deer. you walk to your car with you looking for your keys in your pocket and jeans. the man walks by, you notice him but dont pay attention, looks like a average person. as soon as he walks by, he attacks you, with a WEAPON! of course not attack comes without a weapon. you are surprised and your freeze up. he stabs you and steals your car and keys. 1. if anything you should practice learning to keep an eye on your surroundings. the mind has a subconscious and giving you a "sixth sense" to pick up something wrong. 2. your martial art that deals with only swords did not help you at all 3. even though you practiced everyday to prepare for something like this, it still happened, you reacted and froze 4. instead of dealing with only sword knowledge, maybe you could have used your environment to your advantage, a piece of glass could have been used, a rock, or even your wallet! through it at him, give him a distraction and attack for weak spot, i mean not like ufc, a strong kick to his side and a right cross to his face, i mean eye gouge (poke), kick to the groin, grab head butt and so on. reality check right?
