I'm farr away from having a kid, but I'm just wondering when that time comes, say they're in Kindergarden (5-6 yrs), is it alright if I use the soap on tongue method if they start to swear? Like saying the F word for instance? I've heard this is a good one and doesn't harm what-so-ever, but what're your comments?

No. If they accidentally ingest it they can get diarrhea. There was a question on here about hot sauce a little bit ago and everyone when ape on the person because it was for a 2 year-old. A lot of celebs are using this punishment on their older kids and it doesn't harm them. I would use a mild sauce, not like Habenero, which is the hottest pepper you can get. Tabasco would work better and it isn't as hot. It will just sting for a couple of minutes. I think age 5 they would tend to remember it better anyway.

I use this method once in a while. After all, look at all the adults now that are just fine, and their parents did it when the were little. I don't make them brush their teeth with it, I just put a dab on my finger and put it in their mouth. It gets the point across, very fast, and works most of the time. And for the person that said, teach your children not to use bad words, sometimes you can't help what your children learn, especially after they are school age. My son and daughter have come home with some whoppers that I know that haven't heard from anyone in my household or friends.

I did that to my daughter when she was 5. She said "I hate you" to me. Well I took her into the kitchen grabbed the dish soap. I thought the bottle was closed, I was just gonna dab the top of the bottle on her tongue. In my anger I was squeezing the bottle. She got a mouth full & swallowed it, She then threw up for the rest of the day. I felt so bad.She never said that again, & we are the best of friends.
She's 23 now with a baby of her own. So all is good.

A little goes a long way- one tap of a bar of soap on the teeth is not enough to make them sick, but they'll taste it!

I do like the above idea about using mouthwash, as long as the child knows to not swallow. Heck, even a plain old tooth brushing with a talking-to from mom or dad can be enough.

Initially, its probably best to sit the child down and explain that some words should not be said. Its better to begin calmly before starting with the punishments.

Soap could give them diarhea. What I did was to make mine wash their mouth out with mouthwash (the nasty generic kind). I said "Well you have a dirty mouth and are saying dirty words, we are going to have to wash your mouth out to get the dirty words out"

I would make her swish a small amount around in her mouth then spit.

It didn't take long for my 6 yr old to stop calling her brother an @$$hole.

We lock up soaps and cleaning supplies because of the danger of ingesting them. It is outdated, ridiculous and potentially dangerous to put soap in a child's mouth.

That used to be a common punishment, but it's now considered abuse. If you are caught doing that to your child, you can be arrested and lose custody. Eating any kind of soap not only causes pain, but can make a child sick. In other words, it is both abuse and child endangerment. I'm glad you asked this before you had kids, though.
