that is so cruel- putting a dog to sleep because he wasn't trained... please tell your dad to have a little more patience and to invest in some training sessions that might help him....

Absolutely, under no circumstances, should your dad be allowed to put the dog down merely as a form of punishment. If he succeeds in his threat, report him to the authorities. Dogs should only be put to sleep if they have a terminal illness or injury, or become agressive to the point of being a danger to someone's physical well-being.

If he does not "cool off" then you should consider taking the dog to a shelter and put him up for adoption. Do not label him as unadoptable just because he is "nervous and misbehaved". You never know, someone may come along and they and the dog will be so compatible that his whole demeanor will change.

What you are describing is training issues. The dog is not trained and has separation anxiety. This means he gets nervous and upset when you leave him.

This is because you and your dad did not train him. It is not his fault.

Use a crate to put him in when no one is home. Some dogs do not like to have the run of the house when they are home alone. It does not feel safe to them and becomes a scary place.

If you can't keep him, call your local rescue groups (go to petfinder.com to find them). They can help you place the dog.

Dogs require work and training. If you can't do this, do the dog a favor and re-home him to someone who can.

It certainly does not warrant putting the dog to sleep, and a lot of vets won't do it for this reason.

well at that age the dog should be housebroken. sounds like your dog has seperation anxiety. they will get very destructive, and could have accidents in the house. i had a doberman that was this way, he would poop when i would leave, and tear things up! i started crating him. maybe you should try this, put him in a crate, with a "kong toy" or a tough toy that he cant destrroy!! u could stuff the kong toy with a treat, it will keep the dog occupied! when the dog does good in the crate praise her. and when the dog does sumthing good no matter what..praise her and give treat. when she goes potty outside, tell him "good boy" and pat his chest and just keep repeating yourself. and give a treat. he will relize "okay she just gave me a treat for going potty outside, maybe i should keep doing this outside". when he goes potty inside, just make sure that u tell him NO in a stern voice! and No your dad canot put the dog to sleep just because of that. im sure a vet wont do it just becasue the dog is destructive. if you want to be sure..then call a vet, and ask them that question! your dad is just upset! and may say things like that, that he doesnt mean. just try training the dog some more.

Its not the dogs fault. Its the people who he has lived with and their failure to teach him proper behavior. Sounds like the best thing would be to let another family adopt him anyway. Take him to a no kill shelter or learn about training him so he knows what is expected of him.
Then get your dad some counseling too,

I hope a vet will not put a dog down just because it has never been trained Maybe you should use a crate for him when you are not at home or place him in a room that he can't get into trouble ask your Dad to take him to some training classes if you can't do it

Would your dad put you to sleep if your threw a baseball through the window?

Just like they have medication for people with nervous conditions, I'm sure they have the same for dogs.

Unfortunately, you can put a dog to sleep for any reason. Sad, but true. If your dad does, I say piss into a cup and mix it up in his coffee (one for old poochy).

Your dad needs to understand that it wasn't the dogs fault. I am a cat lover and had to put my cat to sleep due to health issues, it was the hardest choice I ever had to make. I hope your dad changes his mind. I would never want an animal put to sleep because he made a mess on the floor.

#1 - train this dog to a crate. Invest in some additional training courses or contact some local rescue groups or the humane society.

You should meet with a trainer and also talk to a vet about medications that can help your dog. Visit the fearful dog website to learn about helping a scared dog.

Crate train the dog. Then when things that are confusing to the dog he can go in his crate and feel safe. He should sleep in there at night. put his favorite toy in there. Then when you leave the house you can put him in there until you return.
