In the mall the other day I saw a young girl (about 4 or 5) who was coughing and not covering her mouth. The mother did not say anything. Further, when a presumed friend of this girl told the girl to cover her mouth, the mother said this was unnecessary.

What is your opinion on this?

I think if the kid is sick, she needs to cover her mouth.

Obviously, the mother is in the wrong here. I know I hate seeing someone cough and not cover their mouth. I'm sure this young girl will be taught those kind of manners at school if she isn't getting it at home.

I have seen research studies that have shown that germs are mostly spread by covering your mouth with your hand and then touching surfaces such as door nobs and railing that other people touch and then put to their own mouths. Coughing or sneezing in the air is actually a very ineffective way of transfering germs. Actually, some friends of mine were subjects in the study - I'll spare you the disgusting details.

I guess the best thing is to cover your mouth with a tissue that you dispose of or with your hand and then put sanitizer on it or wash them right away.

No matter the reason for the coughing, it is just plain good manners to cover your mouth when you cough. Latter on, the mother will look back and wish she had taught her child some manners.

I personally think this is bizarre, how a parent cannot think that this isn't wrong for their child to be coughing all over the place without covering their mouth... although it's up to the parents how they want to bring up their own children!

Actually, the prevailing wisdom now is not to cover your mouth with your hands, because you would then spread those germs everywhere when you touch something.

It's more recommended you use the crook of your arm, or try to just direct the cough away from other people.

It is necessary! What is this mother thinking!!! It's only polite to cover your mouth when you cough so you don't spread germs, it's like when you are eating you don't want to chew with your mouth open that is rude.

Unfortunately a lot of adults do not cover their mouths when coughing etc.
So if they do not, they will not teach their kids to either.
It really ticks me off to see, hear and be on the end of it, and adults do not like to be told about it either.
I know my parents taught me to cover my mouth, I guess it is just this generation who do not give a toss about other people.

It should be a learned behavior to cover ones mouth when coughing.

However, the mall is such a crowded, concealed area, you can't go there and expect to walk out without someone elses germs on you (good or bad)!

RUDE!!! I always make my kids cover their mouths when they cough to prevent the spread of germs and bacteria and if that ain't enough i carry purell around with me in my purse so they don't get other peoples germs from doors ans carts and things which could make them sick. That mother needs to teach her child manners.
