I'm really surprised to hear someone that young has to wear bifocals for reading while wearing contacts. I'm severely nearsighted and have worn contacts since I was in my early 20s. For years, I could read just fine with only the contacts. It wasn't until I got into my 40s when that started to change. Now, I have to wear reading glasses when I have my contact lenses on but I don't need them otherwise.

I'd almost never say someone's eyes were horrible*.
-6.00 is bordering on severe shortsight, nothing worse.
Some *standard* contact lens ranges go up to 10, 12 or 20 dioptres.

She doesn't "have to" wear bifocals in one sense, but their use should be supported and encouraged if they have been given, despite their awkwardness.
They are a recognised technique to try and reduce or halt further myopic shift by reducing the accommodative and convergence effort for closework. It does appear to work in some but not all cases.

If her Rx is up-to-date she is likely to have 20/20 with her contacts. Without correction her vison would be something like 20/400. Fine for walking around the house, but not good for any detailed vision more than about eight inches from her nose.

* in rare cases when you ARE dealing with a real mess, and the patient knows it, it's better to be honest than to try to be unrealistically positive.
